LATEXO — Trinity’s Cade Mauldin won a first-place medal at the Latexo Tigers Invitational.

Mauldin also posted a 9th-place finish at the SHSU Invitational on Saturday in Huntsville.

TRINITY — Following back-to-back road games that ended with a scoreless Tiger team, Trinity was able to entertain the home crowd with scores and leveled-up play against the Hardin Hornets on Friday.

The Tigers received the ball and opened in a new look offense with Marshall Sizemore leading the way. The Tigers ran the wildcat offense for the first plays and after gaining a first down returned to the traditional offensive, and on third down threw an interception.

The Tiger defense was able to force a fumble stopping the Hornets opening drive, but the first quarter turned into a defensive struggle that saw a 0-0 tie heading to the second quarter.

Opening the second quarter on offense, the Tigers were able to drive the ball to the Hornet 22-yard line, but a failed fourth-down attempt ended the drive. The Hornets first possession of the second quarter lasted only one play, but it was a short pass that ended up going 78 yards for the score and a 6-0 Hornet lead.

The Tigers drove the ball deep into the Hornet end of the field again, but on fourth down the Tigers attempted a 26-yard field goal by Jacob Robertson, which was the first successful field goal by the Tigers for several seasons. The Hornets then took six plays to march down the field and extend their lead to 14-3 before the intermission.

The second possession of the third quarter ended with another big play for the Hornets that gave them a 21-3 lead.

The Tigers punted on their next possession, but the last opportunity of the quarter saw the Tigers march 46 yards down the field. The drive was capped by a 16-yard touchdown pass from Jonah Gonzales to Bryan Crabtree.

Tempers flared by both teams and after many flags and lengthy discussions by the officiating crew, it was determined that each team committed three unsportsmanlike like conduct penalties and all penalties were offsetting and the Tiger touchdown stood.

The fourth quarter saw fight and determination from the Tigers, but ultimately they fell to the Hornets 21-10, further extending their losing streak.

The Tigers hope to get on the winning side of the scoreboard Friday Night at Tiger Stadium as the West Sabine Tigers head to town, kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Groveton
GROVETON — The Groveton Indians only managed a fourth-quarter safety as they posted a 14-2 loss to Frankston on Friday.

Top producers were quarterback Ian Utz, who went 5-for-15 for 35 yards passing; Ryan Cathey, who pulled in two catches for 18 yards; Clifton Davis, who had two catches for 12 yards; and Billy Thomas with one catch for 5 yards.
On the ground, Utz had 16 carries for 42 yards; Darius McQueen had 13 carries for 65 yards; Wyatt Snead had seven carries for 17 yards; and Phoenix Bowman had seven carries for 28 yards.

On defense, Clifton Davis had 4 tackles and 1 interception; Jarett Loftin had 3 tackles and 1 interception; Logan Townsend had 7 tackles; Carter Cox had 3 tackles and a sack causing a safety; Chase Blair had 6 tackles; Jaylen Lewis had 2 tackles and a sack; and Wyatt Snead had 7 tackles.

APPLE SPRINGS — The Eagles beat a strong High Island team 64-53 on Friday.

Head Coach Cody Moree said quarterback Dakota Campbell had his best game of his life, throwing for more than 200 yards and rushing for at least that much.

Hunter Davis, Kameron Spencer and Conner Kaufman each posted TD receptions, and Kaufman had 100-plus yards in kickoff returns including a 72-yard touchdown.

Defensive standouts were Wade McMullen, Ricky Goodwin, Dawson Moore, Logan Nunley, Andrew Pion and Hunter Davis.

GROVETON — The Indians overcame its opening season loss by beating cross-county rival Trinity 27-0 in a rescheduled bout onThursday.

The game was moved because there were no officials available on Friday.

Groveton Head Coach Matthew Woodard said the win was awesome for the kids.

“It’s a great feeling watching your kids smile after how much work they have put into it to be successful,” he said.

Offensively, quarterback Ian Utz went 10-14 for 137 yards with 1 TD, while giving up only 1 interception.

Darius McQueen had 10 carries 30 yards and 1 TD; Wyatt Snead had 5 carries for 37 yards and 1 TD; Phoenix Bowman had 3 carries for 12 yards and 1 TD; and Utz had 8 carries for 34 yards.

In the air, Clifton Davis had 4 catches for 88 yards; Ryan Cathey had 4 catches for 34 yards; Wyatt Snead had 1 catch for 8 yards; and Gunner Wilson had 1 catch for 7 yards and 1 TD.

On defense, 23 players record a tackle, while Clifton Davis had 3 tackles, 2 pass breakups and 2 interceptions; Tanner Steubing had 6 tackles; Daiton Chandler had 4 tackles; Wyatt Snead had 3 tackles and 4 punt returns for 38 yards; and Chase Blair had 3 tackles.

Trinity dropped to 2-0 in the loss, prompting Head Coach Patrick Goodman to emphasize consistency.

“I talked to them about being consistent throughout the game — taking care of your area of control — making sure that they know what they are doing (assignments) so that they can play fast and limit the mistakes,” Goodman said.

He also said the team has to have more focus in practice and continue to battle and keep their heads up, and is expecting some key players to return from injury this week.

While there wasn’t much offensive production, Goodman said a few players had some solid games on defense, such as Jaryis Woods; Trintin Fulsom played well on both sides of the ball and blocked a punt; Cole Hortman had some big hits on defense; Tristian Williams had an interception; and Marshall Sizemore had a good defensive game and did a good job running the ball.

Apple Springs

The Eagles posted their first loss as they were not able to overcome a 24-0 first-half run by the King’s Academy Knights on Saturday, falling ultimately 30-12.

Dakota Campbell ran for one TD and connected with Connor Kaufman for the teams two scores.

KIRBYVILLE — Coming off a 0-10 record last season, the Tigers were hopeful of getting the sting of defeat replaced with the taste of victory. Unfortunately, a 30-minute rain delay, a swamp of a field and a tough Wildcats team combined for a quick stop to the dreams of victory.

Trinity lost to the Wildcats 52-0 on Friday in Kirbyville.

The Tigers received the opening kickoff and a quick three plays and a punt gave the ball to the Wildcats. The Wildcats first possession ended just a quickly with a fumble recovered by the Tigers on the second snap.

Unfortunately for the Tigers that would be the only bright spot in the first half of play as the Wildcats scored on every following possession of the first half, including an interception returned for a touchdown.

The Tigers went into the locker room at halftime hoping to make adjustments to improve on a 38-0 deficit that included one defensive stop in the form of a recovered fumble, zero first downs, one pick six and one fumble.
The second half was more merciful on the Tigers as the game clock ran continuously and the Wildcats only had possession of the ball four times. The Tiger defense was able to force one fumble, one tackle for a loss, one fourth down stop late in the game and give up two more touchdowns.

The Tigers were able to make one first down in the game, with 2:26 remaining in the third, when Cole Hortman caught a pass from Jonah Gonzales.

For the duration of the game, the Tiger offense never crossed the 50-yard line and gave up one pick six interception, lost one fumble, completed one first down and one pass completion. The defense had 2 fumble recoveries, and one defensive stop, but gave up six touchdowns and 10 2-point conversions.

Opening the season with a 52-0 loss was not what the Tigers and coaching staff had hoped. While addressing the team, Coach Patrick Goodman expressed his disappointment with the team for their performance and work ethic during practices. He stressed that each player needs to be at practice each day and work to get better.
The Tigers will once again be on the road Friday night as they make the short trip to Groveton to take on the Indians and renew the historically heated rivalry. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.

Apple Springs
The Eagles christened their new stadium in grand style, outlasting the Trinity School of Texas Titans 51-6 on Friday.

Head Coach Cody Moree said the kids did very well, and the stats agree.

Logan Nunley carried the ball 14 times for 179 yards and 4 touchdowns. Also contributing was Ricky Goodwin, who rushed for 71 yards and one TD; Ryan Phillips with 51 yards and a TD; and Kameron Spencer had a 17 yard reception for a TD.

Quarterback Dakota Campbell had one TD pass and another rushing. Linemen Bradyn Kaufman and Wade McMullen had 21 and 17 key blocks, respectively.

Defensively, the team recorded 6 stops in 7 series. Leading tacklers were Dawson Moore with 12 and Hunter Davis with 10. Ricky Goodwin and Logan Nunley each had 5 and Tanner Smith had 4.

Bradyn Kaufman and Wade McMullen each caused fumbles which were recovered by Goodwin and Moore.
Kicker Kail Rogers kicked two successful on-side kicks, which were recovered by Noah Thompson and Andrew Pion.

Groveton
LOVELADY — The Groveton Indians fell in their season opener 28-7 to the Lovelady Lions.
Leading the offense for the Indians were David Ayala with 5 carries for 22 yards; Darius McQueen with 8 carries for 37 yards and 1 TD; and Ian Utz with 9 carries for 22 yards.
Defensivly, Logan Townsend had 8 tackles, Wyatt Snead 7, Chase Blair 6, Tanner Steubing 6 and Daiton Chandler with 3 tackles and an interception.
