TRINITY — The Lady Tigers dropped a game 101-17 to Hargrave on Friday.

The Falcons used an effective press to keep Trinity from gaining any traction.

The loss puts the Lady Tigers at 1-2 overall in the young season.

Groveton

SAN AUGUSTINE — The Lady Indians lost against the San Augustine Lady Wolves 42-30 on Friday.

Groveton spent the first three quarters on its heels against a tough offense, but managed to come around and go shot-for-shot in the fourth quarter.

TRINITY — The Lady Tigers basketball squad opened its season last week with a decisive 74-29 win over Kennard.

Head Coach Yaya Curry said that at the Friday game against Kennard, Shauna English finished the game with a double-double — 14 points and 10 rebounds, right alongside her big sister, Shania English, who also had a double-double with 22 points and 10 rebounds. 

Neveah Craft finished the night with 21 points and had 6 steals 

On Saturday, the Lady Tigers suffeed a 42-38 loss against Rusk.

The English sisters combined at total of 21 rebounds, and Craft scored 17 points and had 5 steals

Next game is 6 p.m. Friday against Hargrave.

TRINITY — The Tigers 29-28 loss to the Crockett Bulldogs on Friday night put an end to a winless season.

The Bulldogs took the opening kickoff and took less than 2 minutes to find the end zone and take a 7-0 lead, but the Tigers took 4 minutes to score, and with the 2-point conversion, took an 8-7 lead. 

However, the Bulldogs scored two TDs and a field to give them a 23-8 lead with under 7 minutes left in the first half. The Tigers were able to narrow the gap to 23-14 with a touchdown, but another field goal by the Bulldogs put the score at 26-14. 

With less than a minute left in the first half, the Tigers started on their own 25-yard line, and with 4 seconds left, the Crockett sidelines gave the Tigers a gift in the form of a timeout. Capitalizing on the extra play, a 65-yard screen pass from Cole Caldwell to Juju Clayborne tightened the score 22-26. 

The Tigers took the opening kickoff of the second half and were able to use 8 minutes to find the end zone and regain the lead 28-26. With just under 7 minutes remaining in the game, the Bulldogs were able to kick the game winning field goal and win by a score of 29-28.

A very emotional and disappointed Tiger team met at midfield after the game, where Head Coach Patrick Goodman expressed how pleased he was with their performance and effort during the game.

Apple Springs

Head Coach Cody Moree said that even though the Eagles ended the season at 2-5, the players kept their spirits up and their attitudes positive.

The Eagles lost their final game of the season against Chester 47-0 on Friday.

“The scoreboard was not kind to us as we concluded the season,” Moree said. “We also had three injuries that severely limited what we could do. However, it has been a long time since I had the privilege of coaching a group of young men who simply would not quit regardless of how badly the deck was stacked against them.”

Moree said that the players truly were baptized by fire this year and grew exponentially. 

“We had no seniors, so all should be back in uniform next year with valuable experience under their belts,” he said. “We will have to wait until February to see how realignment goes but we are excited about the next several years of Apple Springs Football.”

TRINITY — Despite the Trinity Lady Tigers playing exceptionally well in its first set against Anderson-Shiro, ultimately the team lost to the Lady Owls 3-0.

Head coach Haleigh Blount said the team’s serve receive was solid and allowed us to create opportunities for assists and kills, but it wasn’t sustained. 

The Lady Tigers led 20-18 in the first game, but began making silly errors during rallies and the score ended up 20-25. In the second, the team began forcing plays and making mistakes, leading to a 25-5 loss; there was some recovery, but Trinity lost the third 25-12.

“We're still learning how to mentally hold on and compete each point, but we're cultivating a strong mindset little by little,” Blount said. 

Nevaeh Craft led in kills, Taneya Maxie led in block touches and blocks, and Leslie Gonzalez led in digs.

On Sept. 28, the Lady Tigers lost to New Waverly 25-13, 25-9 and 25-10.

Up next is Onalaska on Tuesday and Hardin on Thursday. 

“We're just looking to build on our experiences for the second round of district,” Blount said. “Our sights are not only this season, but building a mindset for next season since everyone will be returning.”

Groveton

The Lady Indians downed Colmesneil 3-1 on Friday at a home conference match.

On Tuesday, Sept. 28, the Lady Indians blanked Latexo 3-0.

The wins give Groveton an 11-6 overall (5-1 district) record heading into a match at home against Lovelady.

Apple Springs

The Lady Eagles dropped two conference matches at home, losing  3-0 to Kennard on Oct. 1, and 3-0 to Chester on Sept. 28.

Apple Springs, now at 0-7 overall (0-5 district), were to face Colmesneil on Tuesday.
