GROVETON — The Centerville girls team lost and the boys won in a set of games against Laneville on Sept. 20.

Head Coach Geoffrey Hollis said the girls game started with tough, physical play that continued throughout the game, and Laneville came out on top 33-9. Eighth-grader Taylor Barton scored 4 points, sixth-grader Avery Brown scored 3 and sixth-grader Laura Rogers scored 2 points.

The boys secured a very impressive 43-24 victory over Laneville, although the game was a lot closer than the final score indicated. Laneville had an 8-5 lead after the first quarter but hot shooting in the second quarter gave Centerville a 19-11 lead at halftime.

This is Centerville’s first victory over Laneville at any level for more than five years. Seventh-grader Hardy Brown led the way with 21 points, followed by eighth-grader Wyatt Clede and seventh-grader Braden White, both with 10 points, and seventh-grader Brice Selman with 2 points.

On Sept. 13, the Bulldogs hosted New Summerfield.

Our B Team boys secured their first win of the season with a 11-7 victory over New Summerfield B Team. Seventh-grader Trinity Nerren led the way with 8 points and sixth-grader Grant Wood chipped in 3 points.

Centerville girls also claimed an impressive victory with a final score of 24-14. Sixth-grader Avery Brown led the Lady Dawgs with 11 points, while eighth-grader Taylor Barton scored 10 points, seventh-grader Raylee Bogs scored 2 points and sixth-grader Jordyn Jones scored 1 point.

The A team boys battled it out in a really good game but came up short 46-29.

New Summerfield held a slim 21-18 lead at halftime, and then hit some extremely tough shots late in the second half to pull away. Eighth-grader Wyatt Clede led the Dawgs with 10 points, while seventh-grader Braden White helped with 8 points, seventh-grader Hardy Brown scored 7 points, seventh-grader Brice Selman chipped in 3 points and seventh-grader Kie Barton scored 1 point.

CORRIGAN — The Groveton Lady Indians fell to Corrigan-Camden 3-1 on Friday — 22-25, 25-22, 15-25, 16-25.

The Lady Indians’ record falls to 0-2 in district and 7-22 overall.

Top producers were Kiki Smith with 1 ace, 10 kills, 4 digs; Stormie Hensley with 1 dig; Anahi Chavez with 3 aces, 2 kills, 1 dig, 2 blocks; Isavel Bautista with 1 ace, 4 kills, 1 dig; Megan Luce with 1 dig, 1 block; Chesney Cleveland with 5 kills; Paislie Voelker with 3 aces, 13 assists; Josselyn Cruz with 1 ace, 4 digs; Aubrey Alexander with 1 kill, 2 digs, 6 assists; and Daisia Leonard with 1 dig, 1 block.

On Sept. 20, the Lady Indians lost their district opener against Latexo — 24-26, 17-25, 16-25.

Apple Springs

Friday was the district opener for the Lady Eagles against Leverett’s Chapel, and Apple Springs lost in 3 sets — 13-25, 16-25 and 12-25.

Head Coach Michael Powell said the girls are playing hard and getting better every day.

“We are very young; out of the eight players that play significant minutes, five are freshmen,” he said.

The Lady Eagles lost to Chester on Sept. 20 in 3 sets.

Trinity

The Lady Tigers crushed the Crockett Lady Bulldogs 3-0 in a district match on Friday.

HEMPHILL — Although the Tigers were hopeful of a winning start to district, the Hornets proved too tough to handle.

Trinity lost to the Hornets 56-0 on Friday.

Speed, experience and size proved to be an impossible obstacle for the Tigers to overcome as the Hornets dominated play from the beginning. By the sounding of the final whistle the Hornets had amassed 56 points while the Tigers were never able to get close to the end zone.

Despite the loss, Head Coach Patrick Goodman said Creek Copley played well on both sides of the ball — offensively and defensively.

He also said Marshall Sizemore and Jaryis Woods both played well on defense, and DeMarvin Grooms had some good runs from the tailback position. 

There are five remaining games on the district schedule, and Goodman said the Tigers are optimistic they can get the season on track and begin to compile some wins.

The Tigers have a much needed off week coming up which will give them time to recover from injuries and prepare for Homecoming on Oct. 7 as district play resumes against the Kountze Lions.

Groveton

The Indians opened district with a 32-20 loss to Alto on Friday.

Leading the effort for Groveton on offense was Ian Utz, who went 9-for-18 for 115 yards and 2 TDs, and Tanner Steubing, who went 1-for-3 for 11 yards and 1 interception.

Phoenix Bowman pulled in four 4 catches for 39 yards; Jackson Cathey had 3 catches for 25 yards; Clifton Davis had 1 catch for 42 yards 1 TD; Wyatt Snead had 1 catch for 18 yards 1 TD; and Gunner Wilson had 1 catch for 2 yards.

On the ground, Utz had 15 carries for 56 yards and 1 TD; Phoenix Bowman had 15 carries for 30 yards; and Darius McQueen had 9 carries for 42 yards.

On defense, Wyatt Snead had 9 tackles and 1 pass broken up; Tanner Steubing had 7 tackles; Carter Cox had 6 tackles; Logan Townsend had 5 tackles; Clifton Davis had 5 tackles; Dation Chandler had 4 tackles and 1 pass broken up; Chase Blair had 3 tackles; and Jarrett Loftin had 1 tackle and 1 pass broken up.

TRINITY — As the Tigers wrapped up non-district play, the halftime show included a tribute to all local veterans and first responders.

Also in attendance for brain aneurism awareness was Ethan Ramsey, who was the victim and survivor of a brain aneurism that kept him hospitalized for months and who is currently undergoing extensive physical therapy and rehab.

On the field, the Trinity Tigers welcomed the West Sabine Tigers to Tiger Stadium in what was called the “Battle of the Tigers.” One Tiger team dominated the game and unfortunately it was not the hometown team.

In what looked like an even matchup on film, the West Sabine Tigers took control of the game from the middle of the first quarter and never looked back. The Trinity Tigers never were able to get momentum in any phase of the game as they fell to 0-4 with a 50-0 loss.

A disappointed Coach Patrick Goodman addressed the team after the loss and explained that he had been hopeful of a better record after non-district play ended, but we are now entering the important phase of the season.

Each team is headed into district with a 0-0 record and better play and determination from each player can give the Tigers the wins needed to participate in the postseason.

Injuries and lack of disciplined play have hindered the Tigers in the non-district portion of the season, but Goodman said he is optimistic the Tigers can perform better when district play begins.

The Tigers will take the long trip to Hemphill Friday Night. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m.

Apple Springs

The Eagles overpowered Tyler on Friday, blanking the Heat 54-0.

Head Coach Cody Moree said It was the team’s first shutout of the year.

Leading tacklers were Wade McMullen and Dawson Moore. Hunter Davis had a pick-six interception. Tanner Smith recorded a safety.

On special teams, Kail Rogers made two successful onside kicks. Wade McMullen had 5 2-point and 1 1-point conversions, and Ricky Goodwin had one. 

Offensively, Dakota Campbell rushed for one and threw for five touchdowns. Kameron Spencer and Ricky Goodwin each had one rushing TD. Touchdown passes were caught by Ryan Phillips, Hunter Davis, Bradyn Kaufman and Conner Kaufman. 

Groveton

The Indians lost to the Grapeland Sandies 44-26 on Thursday.

The game was moved from its normal time Friday due to issues with finding officials.

Top offense performers were quarterback Ian Utz, who went 12-21 for 186 yards for 4 TDs and tossing 2 interceptions.

Top receivers were Clifton Davis with 5 catches for 54 yards and 1 TD; Wyatt Snead with 3 catches for 68 yards and 2 TDs; Jarett Loftin with 3 catches for 41 yards; and Billy Thomas with 1 catch for 23 yards and 1 TD.

Top rushers were Utz with 10 carries for 37 yards; Phoenix Bowman with 8 carries for 12 yards; and Darius McQueen with 6 carries for 28 yards.

On defense, Tanner Steubing had 9 tackles; Chase Blair had 8 tackles; Clifton Davis had 5 tackles and 1 pass breakup; Wyatt Snead had 5 tackles and 1 pass breakup; Daiton Chandler 3 had tackles; Jaylen Lewis had 3 tackles; Jarrett Loftin had 2 tackles and 1 pass breakup; and Carter Cox had 2 tackles.
