ANDERSON — The Tigers had to try to quickly get into game condition to make up for two weeks of missed games, practices and conditioning due to COVID.

It wasn’t enough, as the Tigers were blanked 28-0 in a final non-district game before heading into district.

The Tigers received the opening kickoff and showed promise on their first drive of the night driving the ball to the Owl 33-yard line before turning the ball over on downs. The Owls were able to take control of the game on their first offensive possession and drive the ball 67 yards for a touchdown. With the 2-point conversion the Owls took an 8-0 lead with 4:48 left in the first quarter.

The Tigers were unable to move the ball on their next opportunity and a short punt gave the ball back to the Owls on the Tiger 30-yard line. With just 30 yards needed to score, the Owls were able to take a 14-0 lead with 1:02 remaining in the first quarter.

The Tiger offense was still unable to put any drives together in the second quarter but the defense was able to force one punt by the Owls. As time dwindled in the opening half the Owls were able to find the end zone once again and take a 22-0 lead into the locker room at halftime.

The second half did not prove to be any better for the offense being able to sustain scoring drives, but the defense was able to put more crucial stops together and hold the Owls to just one score after a failed fourth-down attempt gave the ball back to the Owls on the Tiger 30-yard line. The drive was successful, giving the Owls a 28-0 victory over the Tigers.

Coach Patrick Goodman told the team after the game that he was proud of the effort given by the team and said that next week starts district play against the Diboll Lumberjacks. Unlike the Tigers, the Lumberjacks were able to get in four complete non-district games prior to the district opener and should be in better condition, so it will be a battle for the Tigers to come away with a victory.

TRINITY — The Trinity Lady Tigers played county rival Apple Springs on Aug. 31, and managed to rack up their first wins of the season.

Trinity Head Coach Haleigh Blount said the team did some amazing things, but has a habit of becoming mentally comfortable with where it is and settling for things that are not up to its potential.

“The great thing is that this team has no seniors, so even though mental habits are hard to break, we can use this year to do just that,” she said. “I'm proud of how far they have come, and I'm excited for their future.”

“After we relaxed and saw that we could play well against the Trinity team, we did much better,” he said.

In the first set, the Lady Tigers took an early 10-1 lead with serves and aggressive play, and the score ended at 25-11.

Blount said that the team was flat in the second game, missing several serves and making unnecessary forced plays that caused several errors.

The score for the last two games were 25-17 and 25-20.

Powell said his girls were making up for a missing starter, but played very well.

“Nevaeh Hernandez is a great leader on the court and she has stepped up this season to help out some of the younger girls, and that was what helped us Tuesday in Trinity,” he said.

Trinity schools are closed until Sept. 13 because of COVID, so no games are scheduled. The Lady Eagles were to face Oakwood on Tuesday, and will face Hudson on Friday.

TRINITY — The Tigers opened the 2021 season Friday with a 36-6 loss against the Hearne Eagles and learned there is more work to be done.

Although disappointed in the 36-6 loss, Head Coach Patrick Goodman said he is optimistic that Friday’s game against Grand Saline will be more competitive. The offense is hopeful of getting three starters returning this week, including two offensive linemen and our starting quarterback.

The defense will concentrate on alignments and being in position to get off the field on fourth down.

Against the Eagles, the Tiger offense was never able to get on track due to the Eagle defensive line spending most of the night in the Tiger backfield disrupting plays. The Tiger defense was able to minimize the total yardage the Eagles gained but was unable to get off the field on crucial fourth-down plays.

By the end of the first half the Eagles had a commanding 28-0 lead over the Tigers. The halftime break brought some adjustments by the coaching staff and the Tiger defense was able to correct some of the defensive mistakes and hold the Eagles to a single score.

The offense still struggled to gain momentum; however, the special teams was able to contain the Eagle punter after a bad snap. With first-and-goal from the 3-yard line, Andrew Crabtree was able to find the end zone and put the Tigers on the board.

The Tigers were originally scheduled to travel to Groveton Friday Night to challenge the Indians, but due to a spike in COVID-19 cases, Groveton ISD cancelled all classes until Sept. 7 to give students the time to quarantine and clean the schools.

The Tigers will still be playing the Indians, but these Indians, from Grand Saline, have a 7 p.m. appointment at Tiger Stadium. This will be the first time these two teams have played since a playoff game around 1983.

Of the four schools in Trinity County, Centerville has the only athlete that will travel to the state meet this weekend in Austin.

Groveton had plenty of athletes participate, but none made the cut for the state invite.

However, plenty of athletes from all schools set personal and season records for themselves.
