Blue Bell and the Texas Sports Writers Association has named the state’s softball players to all-state teams.

Three players from the Groveton Lady Indians were named; Shelby Arnold made first team, Lexi Easterling and Megan Luce made second team, and Abby Lee received honorable mention.

Coach of the year is Kirk Allen and player of the year is Kenzie Jones, both of Crawford.

GROVETON — Ten of the Regional Champion Groveton Lady Indians softball squad were named to the all-district team.

Additionally, Megan Luce was named Offensive Player of the Year, and Abby Lee was named Newcomer of the Year.

Infielders Kiki Smith and Landree Martin, outfielder Lexi Easterling and pitcher Shelby Arnold were named all-district first team.

Outfielder Tatum Porter, catcher Bailee Reed and first baseman Madison Thomas were named all-district second team.

Anna LaRue received honorable mention.

Lady Indians fall in regional finals

RUSK — After reaching new heights for the Groveton softball program, the Lady Indians, in their first-ever appearance in the regional finals, lost to rival Lovelady.

On Thursday, Groveton lost to Lovelady 5-0, and on Friday, 11-2.

Coach Chris Sexton said in a post that this season has been one of the most fun of his coaching career.

He said the team had its ups and downs and went through a learning phase, but learned to trust each other and ended up building something special, winning 31 games overall.

In the Friday game, Abby Lee hit her 12th home run of the season.

WHITEHOUSE — The Groveton Lady Indians continue their romp through the Cinderella Season, down Kerens in two games to claim the Regional Semifinal Championship last week.

The two wins, 9-4 on Friday and 14-1 on Saturday, sets the team up to reach the Regional Final for the first time in school history.

Coach Chris Sexton said words cannot express how proud he is of the team and the hard work they have put in.

He also said he wants to thank the many fans and parents that made the long trip to Whitehouse to see history be made in person.

In the Friday game, Kiki Smith was a monster at the plate, going 3-for-4 with 2 doubles and 3 RBIs. Shelby Arnold went 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Abby Lee, Bailee Reed, Tatum Porter and Madison Thomas each contributed a hit.

Martin and Megan Luce combined for pitching duties, posting 5 strikeouts and only one base on balls and giving up 10 hits.

In the Saturday game, Thomas went 3-for-4 and Lexi Easterling 3-for-five to lead the team. Smith and Arnold each contributed 2 hits apiece, and Reed and Luce one; Easterling, Luce and Smith notched a triple apiece, while Arnold, Easterling and Thomas each hit a double.

Arnold gets the win on the mound, allowing only 1 run and five hits while striking out 5.

Next week, Groveton faces tough rival Lovelady at Rusk High School in an all-District 21 Region III Final. 

Game 1 is at 7 p.m. Thursday, and Game 2 is at 2 p.m. Friday.
