APPLE SPRINGS — The annual Apple Springs Holiday Hoops Basketball Tournament put all county teams in one spot last weekend and saw the Groveton Indians take first place out of a pool of eight teams.

Their journey involved beating Little Centerville 44-31, Apple Springs 37-34 and Jacksonville’s JV 59-51.

In the Championship game the standouts were Jarrett Loftin with 18 points, Daiton Chandler with 10 points and Wyatt Snead finished with 16 points.

•Centerville took the Consolation Trophy with a 38-35 win over Chester. 

The Bulldogs were in a back-and-forth battle with Chester, though both teams struggled offensively, and the score was 14-9 at halftime score.

Both teams scored 9 points in the third, setting up an exciting fourth-quarter finish; Chester led until Bulldog Aydn Self knocked down two crucial free throws with 4 seconds remaining in regulation to tie the game at 32 and send the game to overtime.

With the game knotted at 35, freshman guard Iain Kendrick hit a huge 3-pointer to put Centerville on top for a 38-35 final.

Top scorers were Aydn Self with 17 against Jacksonville Freshmen, 17 against Chester; Colton Brasuell with 12 against Groveton; Brayden Watson with 11against Jacksonville JV; and Iain Kendrick with 8 against Groveton and 8 against Chester.

To get to the consolation final, Centerville lost to Groveton 44-31, but downed the Jacksonville JV team 47-23.

•Tournament host Apple Springs did not fare as well.

The Eagles won their opener against Jacksonville JV 42-35, but lost their next two — 60-31 to Richards and 37-34 to Groveton.

TRINITY — Assistant Principal Shaun Stout has assumed athletic director duties for Tiger sports.

Stout was in place as interim Nov. 7 after Patrick Goodman was reassigned Nov. 4. Goodman, who has a year left on his contract, is now head of the Disciplinary Alternative Education Placement Center.

Trinity ISD Superintendent Dr. John Kaufman said the administration feels a change was necessary to improve the overall performance of the sports program.

“I felt some areas were lacking in performance,” he said. “I appreciate the job that Coach Goodman has done, but at this time, a change needed to be made.”

The search for a new director began Nov. 8 and will close out Jan 6, 2023, Kaufman said., and then a selection committee of administrators, community members and parents will be appointed.

In a statement, Stout said it is an honor to be trusted with the duties to represent our great students.

“Our Trinity coaches, along with myself, are going to continue to work hard to help our students reach their full potential both academically and athletically,” he said. “We believe as a staff that all things are possible for our students here in Trinity.”

GROVETON — The Lady Indians downed the Trinity Lady Tigers 36-26 on Friday.

Trinity Head Coach Patrick Carter said he is very proud of the team, being only two games into the season.

For the Lady Tigers, Shawwna English led the team in scoring with 10 points, 8 rebounds and 3 blocks. Taneya Maxie and Natalie Bates each had 6 points.

For Groveton, top producers were Anahi Chavez 13 points, 6 steals, 4 rebounds and 2 assists; Kiki Smith with 11 points, 4 steals and 4 rebounds; Isavel Bautista with 5 points and 3 rebounds; Stormie Hensley with 4 points; and Laney Peterson with 3 points and 2 steals.

Trinity opened the girls’ basketball season on Nov. 8 against Palestine Westwood, losing 38-37. Leading scorers were Maxie with 18 points and English with 15 points.

Centerville

In the girls opening game, early foul trouble put a damper on Centerville leading to a 41-19 victory for Latexo.

Eight first-quarter fouls put two Centerville starters out of the game early and mixed with hot shooting from Latexo meant Centerville struggled.
Top scorers were Kate Rogers with 15 points and Jada Welch and Brianna Commiato each with 2 points.

In the boys opener, defensive and shooting struggles for the Bulldogs allowed Latexo to jump out to a 24-14 lead at halftime.

More of the same continued in the third quarter as Centerville only managed 5 points. The Dawgs finally showed some life with 16 fourth-quarter points, but it wasn’t enough as Latexo earned a 59-35 victory. 

Top scorers were Aydn Self with 13 points, Anthony Commiato with 7 points, Brayden Watson with 4 points, Ashton Dain with 4 points, Payson Dickinson with 3 points, Ty Havard with 2 points and Audra Bolton with 2 points.

In the JV boys match, Centerville grabbed an impressive 59-34 win over Latexo through hot shooting. Colton Brasuell led scoring with 18 points, followed by Iain Kendrick with 17 points, Blayn Self with 14 points, Ty Powers with 6 points and Wesley Maxfield with 4 points.
