CLEVELAND — The Tarkington Longhorns never had a clue on how to handle the fast-acting Coldspring Trojans, and were held scoreless on Friday

The Trojans posted a 51-0 win over Tarkington.

The Trojans scored early and often. With just 9:45 on the clock in the first quarter, Eddie Brown rolled off-tackle for the first score of the night. The two-point attempt failed so the early score was just 6-0.

Later on in the first quarter, with just 2:43 left on the clock, the Trojans pushed another TD and this time the two-point attempt was successful, sending the score to 14-0.

Early in the second quarter the Trojans posted yet another TD, putting the score at 21-0. Coldspring scored twice more to send the teams into halftime with the Trojans leading 33-0.

The second half was more of the same, leading to the final score of 51-0. Coldspring put up 423 rushing yards and 439 total yards on offense.

Leading rushers for the night are Eddie Brown, with 134 yards on 7 carries and 2 TDs; Easton Dean, 75 yards on 9 carries and 2 TDs; and Noah Vercher, 81 yards on 4 carries and 1 TD.

Other notable rushers were Luke Monroe, Andy Tyson, Jaden Sparks and Max Irving.

In the air, quarterback Luke Monroe went 1-of-2 for 16 yards

Next week is the district’s bye week, after which district play will start against Trinity.

DIBOLL — The Shepherd Pirates, one of only a few teams playing last week, lost a last-minute substitution game on Friday 26-12.

Head Coach Miles Robison said that while the team moved the ball well, they had some costly turnovers in the form of interceptions.

“I thought our kids played well considering we weren’t originally scheduled to play Diboll,” he said. “We were excited to play a game when many area teams had to cancel because of COVID. I also I thought playing a quality football team like Diboll would only make us better.”

Robison said the team still is making some mental mistakes, but has shown improvement over past two weeks.

“Our defense gave up a couple of long TD runs the first half, but made good adjustments in the second half,” he said.

The Shepherd Pirates Players of the Week for the 44-14 win over Tarkington are (from left) H.D. Green for offense, with 75 yards rushing, 117 yards passing and two TDs; the Hit of Week Award winner Landon Robbins; and Preston Stephens for defense, with four tackles and two sacks. The Shepherd Pirates Players of the Week for the 44-14 win over Tarkington are (from left) H.D. Green went 1-11 with two interceptions in the air, he carried the ball 20 times for 131 yards and scored the team’s two TDs.

Junior Tanner Lacey carried the ball 11 times for 94 yards, with one run racking up 33 yards.

For defense, Alberto Tovar pulled in the team’s only interception, and led with five solo and two assisted tackles. He was followed by Eli Wyatt, who tackled five solo and one assisted, and Preston Stephens with 3 and 2.

Both teams now stand at 1-1 overall.

Barring any last-minute cancellations, the Pirates face the Coldspring Trojans at home on Friday, and Robison said it should be a good game.

“They’re big up front, and have couple of good backs,” he said. “We’ll be working on plan to hopefully slow down big plays and control the football to keep our defense off the field.”

A new middle school game has been added for Shepherd/Coldspring as well, which will be at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, at Coldspring.

COLDSPRING — The Coldspring-Oakhurst boys and girls track and field programs each qualified seven entries for the Region III-Class 3A Meet this weekend in Waco.

The Trojans finished third in the team standings of last week’s Districts 23/24-3A Area Meet, while the Lady Trojans finished fifth. The meet took place on April 12 at Trojan Stadium in Coldspring.

The top four finishers in each event qualified for the region meet, which takes place Friday and Saturday at Midway High School’s Panther Stadium in Waco. The top two finishers and top third-place finish statewide in each event qualify for the Class 3A state meet, which takes place May 6 in Austin.

TROJANS

A trio of first-place finishes kept C-O in the hunt for the area championship. Edward Brown and Curtis Parker, Jr., won the 100 and 400-meter runs, respectively, and the quarter of Parker, Reagan Roberts, Gavin Trejo and Jared Curry won the 1,600-meter relay.

Dante Eldridge took second in the shot put, while Carter Currie was the runner-up in the pole vault. Troy Fortenberry finished third in the pole vault and fourth in the 300-meter hurdles.

C-O had 79 points in the standings to finish third. East Bernard (96.5) and Boling (94) finished 1-2.

LADY TROJANS

Five of the seven regional-qualifying entries for C-O took place in the field events, including a pair of first-place finishes. Alexis Moore and Amanda Ready won the shot put and high jump, respectively, to lead the Lady Trojans’ charge.

Shanaya Gilbert finished second in the shot put, while Alexis Chandler was third in the triple jump, and Crystal Ramos took fourth in the pole vault. Miya Ellis qualified in two events as she finished third in the 100 and fourth in the 200.

TRINITY — Hot bats gave the Coldspring-Oakhurst Trojans a commanding win over the Trinity Tigers on Friday.

Trojan Head Coach Austin Riddell said it was a great overall team win, defeating the Tigers 18-1 in five innings.

Easton Dean, who also carried pitching duties, went 4-for-5 and hit for the cycle, including his first high school-career home run. He also put up three strikeouts while allowing only two hits.

Trinity managed to put up a few hits, but couldn’t string together enough to counter Coldspring-Oakhurst.

Tiger head coach Chad Kinney said senior Sam Allen gave up a total of 4 earned runs and 1 RBI at the plate, and junior Cole Caldwell went 2-for-2 with a triple and a run scored. Freshmen Remi Lassman and Cole Hortman each went 1-for-2 with a double, and freshman David McKendree walked twice.

Riddell said this week is going to be a tough test, as they were to play New Waverly on Tuesday at home, and then travel to Anderson-Shiro on Thursday.

“This will be a great measuring tool to see where we truly stand in our district and we are excited for the opportunity,” he said.

Kinney said that due to having players out, the next game — Onalaska on Thursday — they will be starting five or six freshmen.
