The Yellowjacket baseball and Lady Jacket softball teams were busy this past week. The Yellowjacket baseball team started the week on Monday with a 10-0 win at home vs Little Centerville. Freshman Turner Johnson collected three hits in four at bats, with a double the first inning, a single in the fourth and fifth innings. Cutter Lowe doubled scoring two runs.

Will Thomason earned the win giving up zero hits and zero runs over four innings. Thomason threw an immaculate inning in the second, striking out three batters with nine pitches. Waylon Sturrock threw two innings allowing zero hits with five strikeouts and no walks.  Jaxon Gay and Will Thomason each collected multiple hits. The Yellowjackets participated in the Douglass tournament losing to Douglass and Gary, then beating San Augustine 11-5. Waylon Sturrock led the offense for the win against San Augustine with three hits in three at bats. Sturrock had a triple, double, and a single. Rex Gilzow, Waylon Sturrock, Will Thomason, and Turner Johnson each had RBI’s. Thomason earned the win allowing zero hits, two runs, three strikeouts, and one walk. Jesse Bittick came in as relief. 

The JV baseball squad also played in a one-day tournament at Onalaska. The JV Jackets lost to Tarkington 3-4 on a walk off by the Longhorns. Turner Johnson was on the mound for the Jackets giving three hits, two runs, four strikeouts, and two walks.

Johnson also led the offense with two hits in two at bats. Wyatt Roberts had two walks. Next they played Coldsprings JV losing 2-7. Jayse Gay was on the mound surrendering nine hits, seven runs, four strikeouts and one walk. Braysen Neal and Henry David each drove in one run. This week the Yellowjacket varsity squad will participate in the Latexo tournament facing Neches at 9am, Dawson at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday Feb. 29. On Saturday, March 1 they will see Latexo at 10:45 a.m. and Apple Springs at 4 p.m.  The JV squad will participate in the Central Tournament facing Central JV at 5 p.m. on Thursday Feb. 29 and on Friday March they will take on Livingston JV at 11 a.m., and New Waverly at 3 p.m.  

The Lady Jackets traveled to Huntington to take on the Devilettes. The Lady Jackets had a four-run lead for most of the game but the Devilettes had a good last inning and closed the gap to one run with the Lady Jackets winning 7-6. Lily Read collected three hits in three at bats, doubling in the first inning, single in the third inning, and a single in the fourth inning. Kinsley Barnes earned the win giving up four hits, three runs, striking out one and walking three. Lily Payne had three RBI’s. 

On Saturday Feb. 24 the Lady Jackets participated in a one-day tournament in Corrigan. The Lady Jackets first beat Trinity 13-6. Holly Moore, Lily Read, Lauren Citrano, and Lily Payne each collected two hits. Moore, Read, Emma Byrd, and Payne each drove in two runs for the Lady Jackets. Kinsley Barnes earned the win in the circle giving up three hits, six runs, struck out four and walked five.

Next up the Lady Jackets lost 1-3 in a close game to Big Sandy.  Allie Ogden started the game in the circle. Ogden allowed four hits, three runs, five strike outs, and four walks. Holly Moore, Lauren Citrano, and Lily Payne each collected one hit. The Lady Jackets ended the tournament beating Grapeland 13-0, with 12 hits. Lauren Citrano, Emma Byrd, Lily Payne, and Allie Ogden each had two hits. Citrano, Ty Cochran, and Payne each had two RBI’s.

The Lady Jackets participate in the Blues Brothers tournament in Nacogdoches this weekend, starting Thursday at 3 p.m. vs Grapeland and 8 p.m. vs Joaquin. Friday they face Alto at 11:20 a.m., and 4:40 p.m. vs Mt Enterprise. On Saturday March 1 they will see Center at 9:40 a.m., and Cayuga at 1:20 p.m.

Track starts this week at Groveton with field events starting at 4:15 p.m.
