Jackets, Lady Jackets take on Spurger

SPURGER – Last week the Yellowjackets traveled to Spurger to take on the Pirates. The Lady Jackets played the Lady Pirates much closer this game than the previous matchup between the two.

Sydney Brock led with 18 points, seven rebounds; two assists and four steals. Kyli Handley had eight points, four rebounds; two assists, and one steal. Abby Grimes ended with five points, three rebounds and one steal. Ty Cocharan and Saydi Handley each had four points, Cochran also had six rebounds. Emma Byrd contributed with two points; three rebounds; two assists and three steals. The Lady Jackets kept the game close but ultimately lost 41-46.

This was the first meeting against Spurger for the boys’ teams this season. The JV team played first and despite their best effort with only 5 players they came up short. The Varsity Jackets also lost but stayed close the entire game. Kasen Citrano led with 12 points, Jesse Bittick was right behind with 10, Brad Davison had 7, Hunter Luther and PJ Purvis each had 5, Jaxon Gay had 4, and Cutter Lowe contributed with one free throw.

On Friday the Yellowjacket Varsity Girls, JV boys, and Varsity boys hosted Leggett at home. The JV started off the night strong winning 41-36. Braysen Neal was on fire scoring 25 points. Bryson Swanson ended with 6, Jackson Woodrome had 4, Jayse Gay had 3, Henry David contributed with 2. The varsity boys team did not do as well, losing 35-71. Kasen Citrano and Hunter Luther each had 10 points, Jesse Bittick had 7, Brad Davison had 4, Turner Johnson and PJ Purvis each ended with 2 points.

The Lady Jackets also took a win from Leggett with a score of 54-31. Sydney Brock led with 18 points, 12 rebounds, 1 assist, 6 steals, and 2 blocks. Ty Cochran had a big night with 10 points, 20 rebounds, one assist and two steals. Abby Grimes had nine points; eight rebounds and one assist.

Saydi Handley had six points, five rebounds; Kyli Handley had five points; six rebounds.

Other contributors were Blakeney Whitworth and Emma Byrd. This brings the Lady Jackets to 5-4 on the district.

  This week the JV and Varsity boys teams will travel to High Island on Tuesday and then Varsity girls and Varsity boys host Goodrich at home with tipoff at 6 p.m.
