Jackets beat ‘Dogs in Colmesneil tourney

It was a tough week for the Yellowjacket basketball teams. The Lady Jackets started district play with a 29-40 loss to Spurger at home on Tuesday. Thursday through Saturday they participated in the Colmesneil tournament where they played Woden JV, Groveton JV, Onalaska, and Goodrich.

They picked up one win against Woden JV. Sydney Brock was named All-Tournament for her efforts.

The Yellowjacket boys basketball team traveled to Centerville on Tuesday after just beating the Bulldogs in the Apple Springs tournament. The Bulldogs sought revenge and beat the Jackets 42-58. The Jackets also participated in the Colmesneil tournament playing teams from Warren, Deweyville, Goodrich, Centerville, and Colmesneil. They picked up another win against Centerville and also beat Colmesneil 49-26 on Saturday.

This week the JV and Varsity boys’ team will play Sabine Pass at home and then start district on Friday Dec. 15 against High Island.

The girls’ team will go to Leggett early in the week and have a bye on Friday due to High Island canceling their girls basketball season because of low numbers.

Tonnies, Byrd and Read play in All-Star game

Coach Courtney Tonnies, Emma Byrd, and Lily Read participated in the Pineywoods All-Star volleyball game on Saturday Dec. 9 at Lufkin High School. There were 62 nominations from 41 schools ranging from 1A-5A.

More than 330 fans showed up to support their schools. The proceeds from the game were donated to the Boys and Girls Club. Coach Tonnies coached for the North Team, Byrd and Read played for the South Team. The South Team won the first set but then lost the next three sets resulting in a win for Coach Tonnies and the North Team.
