Lady Jackets sweep Spurger, Goodrich

The Lady Jacket volleyball team had two games on the road this week, sweeping both Spurger and Goodrich in three sets each.

Tuesday in Spurger the Lady Pirates put up a fight in the first and second sets with scores of 25-17, 25-18. On the third set the Lady Jackets turned up the heat and put a quick end to the match with a score of 25-5. Lily Read led in kills with 21 and digs with 9. Kinsley Barnes was behind her with 8 kills, 6 digs, and 3 aces. Marae Pounds also had 8 kills and 3 aces. Lauren Citrano also had 3 aces, 8 kills, and 6 digs. Sydney Brock led in service receptions with 15 and included 8 digs for defense. On offense Brock had 2 aces and 1 assist.  Emma Byrd led in assists with 37. Byrd also had 5 digs, 3 kills, and 1 ace. The JV Lady Jackets also swept the Lady Pirates in their final game of the season. 

The Lady Jackets ended the week in Goodrich defeating the Lady Hornets 25-10, 25-13, and 25-12. Specific stats were not available. The Lady Jackets will celebrate Senior Night Tuesday Oct. 24 against Leggett at home.

This game ends district play and they finish the season as District Champions awarding them a first round bye in the playoffs. The Lady Jackets will play the Garrison Lady Dogs for a warm-up game on Friday, Oct. 27 at 4:30 p.m. in Garrison.


‘Jackets celebrate Senior Night

Yellowjacket football celebrated Senior night by playing their first district game this week against Burkeville.

During the pregame, Will Thomason was presented with his State Championship golf trophy for his accomplishment last spring.

Betty Ann Whitworth, Chester ISD Librarian, was honored for her fight against breast cancer with flowers and several compliments made by students and staff were read from the press box. Ms. Betty Ann or “Bebe” as everyone calls her, was designated as Honorary Captain and flipped the coin to start the game. The Jackets came out in full swarm defeating the Mustangs 67-26. The game started well for the Mustangs when they scored on their first play after the kickoff. The Yellowjackets quickly answered with a touchdown of their own by Keighen Green on their first play of the game. The Jackets had the better defense of the night with a leading contribution by Jesse Bittick with15 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. Kasen Citrano with 5 tackles and a forced fumble. Zach Redwine and Waylon Sturrock each had 6 tackles. On offense Keighen Green led with 16 rushes for 203 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also had 4 catches for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns. Trayce Knox was 9 for 17 on passing for 250 yards, had 4 touchdowns and one interception. Kasen Citrano had 3 catches for 64 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Bittick had 8 rushes for 61 yards. Zach Redwine had two catches for 50 yards. Cutter Lowe had 1 touchdown reception by Turner Johnson. During halftime the Chester ISD Seniors were honored by walking onto the field with their parents as their high school accomplishments were read. Football Sweetheart, voted on by the football team, was awarded to Emma Byrd.

“Mr. Spirit,” which was voted on by the cheerleaders, was awarded to Zach Redwine. The Yellowjackets are 1-0 in district and 4-4 on the season. Friday Oct. 27 they will travel to Leveretts Chapel for their second of three district games. Kickoff is scheduled for 7p.m.
