Lady Jackets take on High Island, Spurger

The Lady Jackets started the week by traveling to High Island to face the Lady Cardinals in their second district game of the season.

Ty Cochran was injured in last week’s game against Burkeville, so Marae Pounds has stepped into that position. Lauren Citrano was placed in Pounds original position on the right side. Both players adjusted well to their new places on the court.

Citrano led in aces with four and played defense well with nine digs. Junior Lily Read was the big hitter for the night with 16 kills. Read also had nine digs. Sydney Brock was the leading defender with 17 digs and 11 service receptions. Brock also had 2 aces. Emma Byrd had 19 assists, 10 digs, three kills, and one ace. The Lady Jackets held the Cardinals to 25-11, 25-9, and 25-11.

Friday the Lady Jackets hosted Spurger, finishing the week 3-0 in district. Scores were 25-8, 25-6, and 25-3. Marae Pounds, Lily Read, and Lauren Citrano each had several kills. Kinsley Barnes led in aces, Sydney Brock in digs, and Emma Byrd in assists.  The JV team also swept Spurger in 2 sets with scores of 25-21 and 25-15. Friday, Oct. 6 both Lady Jacket teams will travel to Leggett with varsity game time starting at 4:30 p.m., JV will follow.

‘Jackets take onApple Springs

The Yellowjacket football team traveled to Apple Springs to face the Eagles on their homecoming night. Junior, Kevron Green led the offense with 14 carries for 190 yards, three touchdowns and had five tackles. Jesse Bittick had nine carries for two touchdowns and also had nine tackles.

Other offensive mentions were Kasen Citrano, PJ Purvis, and Trayce Knox. While Bittick and Green led in defense, Citrano, Purvis along with Waylon Sturrock and Zach Redwine were also mentions. The Yellowjackets scored first and stayed ahead, but with 40 seconds left on the clock before halftime the Eagles scored making the score 28-26.

Kevron Green immediately answered back with a kickoff return touchdown. The Yellowjackets then kicked off to the Eagles and with seven seconds left in the half the Eagles had just enough time for a play for another touchdown. In the second half the Jackets held the Eagles to only one more touchdown but adding penalties and only one touchdown of their own resulted in a tough Yellowjacket loss 38-42.

The Yellowjackets have a bye week and will return for Homecoming night, Oct. 13 with kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

JV football hosted Mt Carmel on Saturday with a middle of the day game starting at 1pm. The Yellowjackets had exactly 6 players while Mt Carmel had 10. Blake Zulpo had 3 touchdowns, Bryson Swanson had two touchdowns and a forced fumble, Jayse Gay, Turner Johnson, and Rex Gilzow each had one touchdown. Wyatt Roberts had 1 tackle and several assists. Each player showed incredible grit while contributing on both offense and defense resulting in a Yellowjacket win 47-32.

Cross-country takes partin Zavalla meet

The Yellowjacket cross-country team participated in a large meet in Zavalla. None of the Yellowjacket runners placed in the top 10 but Coach Muncrief says they are all improving in time and expects the district meet to go well. They have one week off, then the district meet is Oct. 11, back at Zavalla.
