‘Jackets fight through tough games

CHESTER – The Yellowjackets hosted the #2-ranked private school Emery Weiner on Saturday at Aubry Bradley Stadium.

Sophomore quarterback Jesse Bittick passed for 89 yards. Junior quarterback

Trayce Knox went 3 of 4 passing for 52 yards, had one interception on defense and a blocked extra point. Freshman receiver Kasen Citrano had 4 catches for 82 yards. Senior Keighen Green had 7 carries for 103 yards including 2 touchdowns. The game ended just before halftime with Yellowjackets on bottom of a 13-58 score. Their next game is September 29 at Apple Springs. Kickoff is at 7pm. Saturday Sept.30 the JV Yellowjackets will host Mt Carmel, beginning at 1 p.m.

Lady Jackets win againstNewton, Burkeville

The Lady Jacket volleyball team had a great week winning both games in sweeps against Newton and Burkeville. Tuesday they traveled to Newton beating them on their home court with scores of 26-16, 25-15, and 25-10.

Marae Pounds and Kyli Handley each had four aces. Abby Grimes was right behind with 3 aces.  Lily Read had 16 kills and 7 digs. Sydney Brock had 16 digs one assist. Kinsley Barnes finished with 13 kills. Emma Byrd had 3 kills and 28 assists.  On Friday the Lady Jackets hosted Burkeville for the district opener. The Lady Jackets made a great showing beating the Lady Mustangs in 3 sets with scores of 25-11, 25-7, and 25-5. Emma Byrd led in aces with 8 and assists with 19. Lily Read led in kills with 11. Libero, Sidney Brock led in digs with 12 and also had 1 ace and 1 assist. Senior, Kinsley Barnes had 6 kills on 17 attempts, one ace, and 3 digs. Marae Pounds had 4 aces, 4 kills, and 5 digs.

Coach Tonnies wants to praise her JV team for sweeping both Newton and Burkeville this week as well. The Lady Jackets continue district play in High Island on Sept. 26, and Sept. 29 against Spurger at JP Johnson Gymnasium.

The junior high Lady Jackets competed in a tournament in Groveton this weekend. The Purple Team finished 5th and the players are 8th graders Carlen Sluga, Saydi Garsee, Madi Myers, 7th graders Lillie Byrd, Abby Bittick, Caede Pounds, Malia Handley, Kennedi Wilson, and sixth grader Ashlyn Clack. The Gray Team finished third overall with players from 8th grade Ria Tullos, Kendal Watton, TanaLyn Knox, Madi Myers, 7th graders Kimber Renfro, Harley Jones, Lillie Byrd, Kelsi Whitworth, and 6th graders Kynlee Citrano, Liliana George, Demi Garsee, and Carlee Gay. Coach Tonnies said that both teams played really well and she is proud of them.

 

Cross-country meet held

Cross country hosted a small meet at Camp Takula with Chester, Buna, Lovelady, Goodrich and Apple Springs in attendance. Chester had 4 runners in the varsity girls division. Koree Hilliard, Hailey Purvis, and Elizabeth Lopez were all together finishing 21st, 22nd, and 23rd respectively. Emma Schakosky was not far behind finishing 25th.

Chester varsity boys also had four runners. Zach Redwine finished 11th, Tanner Whitworth 18th, Jaxon Gay 22nd, and Cutter Lowe 23rd. Junior high girls had a good showing with Malia Handley placing 3rd, Kynlee Citrano 5th, and Carlee Gay 6th for top 10. Demi Garsee finished 11th, Harley Jones 14th, Raelyn Crookes 15th, Caede Pounds 18th, and Kinlyn Gray finished 28th. Junior high boys finished with Russell McDonald in third, Gunner Walker in 9th, and David Walker in 12th. Their next meet is Sept. 27 at Zavalla.
