DAM B – A Warren man is in custody after being caught on suspicion of catching fish in an illegal manner, according to reports from Texas Parks and Wildlife.

According to Captain Brandon Moseley with TPWD, a game warden was patrolling the Neches River, just south of the Steinhagen Dam near Dam B, and observed a boater throw something into the water. When the game warden got closer, he noticed that someone in the boat was using a zapper to shock fish. The boater, 64-year-old Ernest Dennis Haynes, Jr., of Warren, was also not in compliance with registration on the watercraft vehicle.

Moseley said shocking fish with a zapper is an illegal practice that involves drawing the fish to the top of the water and reeling them in with a net. The charge is a Class C misdemeanor.

In addition to the freshwater fishing violation of shocking fish, Haynes also was charged with unlawful possession of firearm by felon (blue warrant) and taken into custody. He is still in custody at the Tyler County Jail.

Moseley said restitution charges might also be assigned for the fishing violation.
