WOODVILLE – Youth baseball is celebrating its golden anniversary in Tyler County.

The Tyler County Youth Baseball organization is encouraging the public to come out this weekend and help kickstart that celebration, this Friday and Saturday, March 15-16 at Hennigan Park in Woodville.

To start things off, Derksen Portable Buildings is sponsoring a homerun derby, beginning at 6 p.m. on Friday. Each player will get one minute to hit as many homeruns as possible, so TCYB supporters and parents can come and watch their favorite player(s) become their league’s homerun champ.

As part of the derby, there will also be a base running competition, for all age groups. All coaches need to have their players on the field by 5:45 p.m., and TCYB is still needing pitchers. Anyone interested can contact Brian Rosencranz via Facebook.

On Saturday, the fun begins at 9 a.m. with 19 games of Little League action. During the opening ceremony, TCYB will unveil its new Junior League Scorecard, which was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Woodville.

As part of the usual concessions at Hennigan Park, TCYB also announced that local artist and photographer Angela Miller will set up a face-painting booth during the opening weekend events. A percentage of the sales from this activity will go toward TCYB’s programs for future maintenance and upgrades to help keep youth baseball alive and well in Tyler County.
