SHEPHERD — The Shepherd Pirates fell to the Tarkington Longhorns 30-14 during Friday night’s non-district game.

What looked to be a walk in the park for the Pirate crew turned sour in the second quarter; the Pirates scored two quick TDs during the first quarter, but the Longhorns regrouped and answered back with 16 points in the second quarter.

Down 14-13, the Longhorns found themselves at the 20-yard line with only minutes left in the second, and then punched a 24-yard field goal setting the score at 16-14 at the half.

The Pirates just could not contain the aerial attack, and the Longhorns went ahead and scored two additional TDs in the second half, sending the score to 30-14.

Coach Jeremy Bennett said, “We had a very good practice week last week. We will have a new look this week.”

The Pirates put up 275 yard of total offense, including 259 rushing. Leading the charge was Preston Stephens with 13 carries for 181 yards and 2 TDs. Jevaris Marsh added 8 carries and 54 yards, and Anthony Wallace chipped in 3 carries for 31 yards.

Coldspring

The Trojans held Splendora scoreless for three quarters and ended up with a 22-14 win over the Wildcats.

The win puts Coldspring’s record at 2-0 in the fledgling season.
