Weather leads to numerous crashes, one death

SAN JACINTO COUNTY — A Jasper woman was killed and numerous people injured in a multi-vehicle crash on U.S 59 on Jan. 15.

Selina Gilchreist, 37, died in the crash.

Texas Department of Public Safety Troopers investigated a multiple vehicle crash on U.S. Highway 59 south, on the Trinity River Bridge, between San Jacinto County and Polk County.

The preliminary crash investigation indicates that at approximately 8:20 a.m., a Toyota Tundra and a Volkswagen Beetle were traveling south. Reports indicate the Toyota lost control and was struck by a Freightliner truck tractor semi-trailer, which then struck the Volkswagen.

The driver of the Toyota was transported to CHI St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Following this crash, an International truck tractor semi-trailer began to slow down and was struck by a Freightliner truck tractor semi-trailer.

There were no injuries sustained during the secondary crash.

Following the secondary crash was a Peterbilt truck tractor semi-trailer that came to a stop in the roadway. It is reported that a Chevrolet Silverado veered left to avoid striking the Peterbilt but struck the rear of the International in the previous crash.

There were no injuries sustained during the third crash.

Following the third crash was a Toyota Rav4, which was struck from behind by a Chevrolet Impala, which caused a chain reaction with a Ford F-150. A Kenworth truck tractor semi-trailer was able to safely veer to the left to avoid the crash but was struck by a Nissan passenger car. It is reported that the passenger of the Ford exited the vehicle and was pinned between the vehicles when the Ford was struck from behind by a Freightliner truck tractor semi-trailer.

The driver of the Chevrolet, 44-year-old Jaqueline Teeters of Livingston, was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Ford, 37-year-old Drew Broom of Jasper, was transported to CHI St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. His passenger, 37-year-old Selina Gilchriest, was transported to CHI St. Luke’s Hospital, where she succumbed to injuries sustained during the crash. An 8-year-old child passenger was also transported to CHI St. Luke’s Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

This is an ongoing investigation.

Also on Jan. 15, troopers investigated a single-vehicle crash on state Highway 156, approximately 1 1/2 miles north of FM 946.

The report indicates that at approximately 9:23 a.m., a 2005 GMC Sierra was traveling north. The driver was traveling at a speed which was unsafe on the icy road conditions and lost control, causing him to travel into the west ditch where he overturned.

The driver, 37-year-old Jesus Ascencio of Shepherd, was transported to St. Luke’s Healthcare in Livingston for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
