Border issues top of political mind

COLDSPRING — Border security and schools are the top issues facing Texas and ultimately the country, according to the No. 2 politician in the state.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, along with State Sen. Charles Schwertner, spoke at the annual San Jacinto County Republican Party Reagan Dinner on Saturday, discussing issues as well as the upcoming election.

Schwertner, whose district includes San Jacinto County after redistricting, discussed some of the accomplishments of the Texas Legislature, which include passing the largest property cut in this state’s history, or in any state, which will have a significant outcome for property owners.

Other wins include an increase in payments to retired teachers, beefing up the state’s broadband infrastructure and passing legislation against the use of DEI in the state’s schools.

Schwertner also said that the Legislature worked on securing the southern border in several special sessions.

Patrick said the country has never been in such a vulnerable position, and it will be up to rural America to save it through voting.

“I want you to know how important you are to saving Texas and America,” Patrick said.

Patrick said the Democrat machine has been changing the country while conservatives “have been napping” by reforming schools, taking over the news media and altering the makeup of the Supreme Court.

“We’re in a fight for the future of Texas,” he said.

Patrick also serves as chairman of the Trump re-election campaign, and said he feels that because Americans are fed up, Trump should see a massive win.

Regarding the border crisis, Patrick said it is a disgrace that Texas has to spend $4 billion of taxpayer month to do the job of the federal government, but even though the president has sent the DHS in to cut the razor wire erected on the border, officials have told Biden, “We have more wire that you have wire cutters.”
