COLDSPRING — The game came down to 3 points and 1 minute, but Coldspring couldn’t catch up and lost to the Tarkington Longhorns 59-56 on Saturday.
The Trojans lead the first and second quarters but lagged behind in the third and fourth, even though the lead toggled back and forth during the second half.
With 1.6 seconds left, Tarkington hit a 3-point shot that rocked the gym floor, and with less than a second left on the clock the ball was inbounded to Luke Monroe, who launched a shot that could have tied the game that ringed out of the basket.
Monroe had 21 points for the night and Kelvin Harden posted 10. Eric Sykes had 8 points while Jacorrion Jackson had 7 points.
The Coldspring and Crockett losses last week sent Shepherd into the sole No. 1 spot in district.
On Friday, the Trojans downed the Crockett Bulldogs 52-49.
The Pirates branded the Longhorns 65-57 on Friday, and Head Coach Jeremy Bennett praised the team’s tenacity as they kept fighting for the lead.
Brayden White led scoring with 22 points, followed by Tristen Cullum with 18 points and Braydon Mettlen with 13.
Brayden White said, “We worked hard this week to be able to do our job against the Horns. The Horns are a good team and we had to keep our focus.”
On Jan. 23, the Pirates beat Onalaska 77-63.
Payton Burton led scoring with 20, followed by Brayden White with 13 and Rogelio Covarruias and Brayden Mettlen each with 12. Mettlen also pulled in 10 rebounds.
On Saturday, the Coldspring Lady Trojans stunned Lady Horns 46-43 after a fourth-quarter surge.
The first quarter found the Lady Trojans down 16 to 4 and looking for some answers on how to stop the aggressive Lady Horns. At the half, Coldspring found themselves down 28-16 with no answer for the Lady Horns’ offense.
Things changed in the second half, as the Lady Trojans managed to take control of the game by slowing the pace down and getting back to the basics. Coldspring climbed to within 3 of Tarkington in the third quarter, and a 16-point fourth gave them the win.
Head Coach Monique Whittaker urged the girls to control the tempo and the ball.
“They were missing too many passes, due to being just to aggressive, and not playing our game,” she said.
Ella Phillips finished the night with 17 points while Shaniyla Goffney added 11. Shantel Goffney posted 10 points for the night.
On Friday, the Lady Trojans fell to the Crockett Lady Bulldogs 52-38.

The Lady Pirates were within striking distance at the half with a score of 26-20. Tarkington’s MS Watson (55) was just to hard to contend with under the basket as she posted 14 points all right under the basket.
Avi Patterson hit a trey to start the second half and see if she could spur the Lady Pirates to a victory. Kiona King jointed the effort with a 10-point total. Jaz Richardson had all her 8 points at the line, and the remaining Lady Pirates posted 17 points together.
