The Woodville Eagles now have another feather to place in their hats in their trek toward a state championship – Area champs.

The Eagles soundly defeated the Longhorns of Tarkington in their second round deep into the UIL 3A Region I and III ranks toward a state title. They faced off with the Longhorns last Friday night at Lufkin High School’s diamond and shut-out the Longhorns in the first game with a score of 10-0.

In game two, which was played on Saturday at Grand Oaks High School, the Eagles gave up one run to the Longhorns, and finished with a final score of 11-1.

The Eagles are set to take on the Diboll Lumberjacks for the regional quarterfinal round of the playoffs. For round three in their post-season bid, the Eagles will play game one on Friday at 7 p.m. at Hudson High School. Game two will be at Jasper HS at 4 p.m., and if needed, a third game will take place 30 minutes after the second.

Tickets to those games are $6 for adults and $4 for students.

The Lumberjacks are coming off their second playoff round with a three-game victory against Boling. The winner of the next round will take on the winner of the Cameron Yoe/Lorena contest.

In Lady Eagles news, although softball season ended with a well-earned co-district championship, many of the team members snagged some district-level awards from coaches.

Those named to district honors were: Kristina Nash (District MVP); Jade McQueen (Defensive MVP); Casandra Perez (First Team Catcher); Alexis Alcalais (First Team Infielder); Mary Lassiter (First Team Outfielder); Marleigh Robinson (Second Team Pitcher); Katie Ronaghan (Second Team Infielder); Rachel Risinger and Madison Wainwright (Second Team Outfielder). Mallory Dunn was named Honorable Mention as infielder.

Lady Eagles’ head coach Meredith Diggles was named Co-Coach of the year, an honor he shared with Kountze’s Kylie Bradley.
