From Staff Reports

The Woodville Eagles tennis teams have had a strong spring 2024 season, so far, with some hardware won in their three tournament appearances. The Eagles and Lady Eagles notched four second place medallions on Feb. 9 in the Lamar University tournament.

They played in the Southeast Texas Tennis tournament on Feb. 15, and got first place in girls’ singles with Claire Tucker and second place in girls’ doubles with Avery Gazzaway and Ruby Shirley, and earned a consolation bracket spot.

They played in the Kountze Invitational March 1, and Stirling Harragh earned a first place medal in boys’ singles and Virginia Ludewig got a first place in girls’ doubles with Carlie Risinger. The Woodville teams played against more than 20 schools in that tournament.

They also notched a consolation bracket in that tourney.

Legendary tennis coach Sergio Ramos has returned to head up the program, and said “When winning becomes a tradition, everything else falls into place.” Ramos said he hopes to rebuild a tradition with Woodville tennis, and instill a culture of winning in a new generation of players.

The tennis teams will play in a Beaumont tourney March 15 named in Ramos’ honor, and on March 22 at home in the Tyler County tournament, which will feature all Tyler County schools with tennis teams, as well as some other schools from surrounding counties.
