COLMESNEIL – Colmesneil City Council met last Tuesday evening for their regular monthly meeting.

Mayor Duane Crews presented a proclamation declaring April Child Abuse Prevention Month, and council unanimously approved it.

In other business, city secretary Wendy Bendy announced that Spectrum had completed the install of the new internet/phone lines on March 28.

Crews said that “we need to see if Shirley Electric can come up here and fix the generator, since the people that had previously worked on it didn’t do the job right.

Council member Billy Andrus mentioned that the city needs to have an updated job description for city employees. “We’ve got a job description for every person here. I would like it to be updated, in case someone wanted to depart from our services, we would be in trouble, we don’t know what people do, how they do it, what time, and how often”.

Crews commented that “Cody Bowen has his license now, and I know in a pinch, we would be covered. We have one part time person now we could pull in to help there. If one wasn’t here, the other two would take care of it. If we get in a bad bind, we could call Jasper for help with the water/sewer lines: we’ve been overloaded before at times and had to do it anyway.”

He added “I have pushed Cody to get his license since he got here, and I can breathe a lot easier at night thinking about that. You get in a bind quick without licensed help. Anybody we hire I would like to see them get their license for a back-up. We have always had trouble keeping someone who’s licensed or keeping them working. Right now, we are in the best shape the city has ever been in for having good help”.

Andrus then asked about the idea of having a code enforcement officer for the city. He said, “we need to set some criteria for people that are moving in here”.

Crews said “when this city was incorporated for the water and sewer, it never has been or never was set up for codes, we have always relied on local law enforcement to take care of any problem we had. We are not a big enough corporation to have the money to support a code enforcement officer.”

In other council business, the minutes form the previous meeting were approved, and all reports, including financial and investment, office, and water and sewer were approved.
