Groveton wins two against county schools

GROVETON — Highway 94 teams Apple Springs and Groveton faced off on Thursday, with the Indians blanking the Eagles 12-0.

Two days earlier, the Centerville Bulldogs made the same trip, with the Bulldogs losing 17-0.

Against Apple Springs, Groveton’s Jake Plotts had mound duty, tossing 9 strikeouts while only allowing 1 hit.

For the Indian offense, Dax Parker and Cade White each had 2 hits, with Parker bringing in 2 RBIs. Brody Thornton also had 2 RBIs, and Jackson Cathey, who went 1-for-2, made his one hit count with a 2-run homer.

Eagles pitcher Nathan Smith tossed 2 strikeouts while allowing 11 hits. Smith also had the lone hit for Apple Springs.

Against Centerville, the Indians took the momentum from the first batter for a 12-run first inning, following up with 5 runs in the second to end the game in 2 ½ innings.

Tanner Steubing allowed no hits while striking out 7 on the mound.

Most Groveton players chipped in on offense, but Jack Sullivan had 2 hits in the win, and Cade White smacked a triple off the left-field fence to drive in a run.

Apple Springs

The Eagles’ other game for the week was an 11-9 win over Alto on March 12.

Dakota Campbell, Connor Kaufman and Tristen Eddins each had 2 hits in the effort, with Campbell driving in 4 runs to Kaufman’s 3.

The Tigers lost two games to Onalaska last week, 23-3 on March 12 and 15-0 on Thursday.

The Lady Tigers run-ruled the Onalaska Lady Wildcats twice last week, 21-6 on Thursday and 23-8 on Friday.

On Thursday, Skylar Knight went 2-for-3 with 1 RBI and 4 runs scored to lead the offense. Rainy Hall toed the mound, allowing only 2 hits while striking out 7.

On Friday, Knight, Hall, Lexi Smith and Jolene Hay each had 2 hits to lead the offense, with Knight driving in 5, and Smith and Halol driving in 3 each. Nae O’Bryant had 4 RBIs.

Groveton

The Lady Indians put two more wins in the books, downing Douglass 25-4 on March 12 and beating Alto 10-1 on Friday.

Groveton currently is ranked 19th in the state behind its 13-4-1 record.

Apple Springs

The Lady Eagles fell to Wells 14-0 on March 12, and lost to Douglass 21-0 on March 11.

Makenzie Cockrell had the lone hit for the Lady Eagles against Douglass, and Abrie McWhorter had the sole hit against Wells.
