SHEPHERD — It was senior night at Shepherd High School and the only senior on the team, Montana Capps was honored and escorted by her family on to the softball field for the last time at the Shepherd field.

Although the game did not go like the Lady Pirates had planned, it was a great year, and they face another trip to the UIL playoffs. Tarkington was first to light up the scoreboard in the second inning. Shepherd answered back with three runs to cross the plate in the third inning.

Tarkington shook things up a little in the fourth with the go-ahead runs, four to be exact. With the score 5-3 in the fifth, Tarkington posted 5 more runs sending the score 10-3. Shepherd answered back with 4 of their own runs but it just was not a good night.

Hooper led the offense with 4 hits and 3 RBIs. She also shared mound duty with Jayci Wilson, and the two combined for 7 strikeouts while giving up 16 hits.

Coach Suzon Martin said, “When I started as Head Coach, we talked to the area sports venues and explained what we were looking for in a prospect for high school softball. It has finally filtered back to the high school level. We are seeing the benefits of a very good stock of ball players for the near future.”

On April 16, Shepherd downed Tarkington 5-1.

The Lady Pirates struck early with 2 runs in the first inning, but the highlight of the game was in the third inning when Jayci Wilson sends the ball over the left field fence posting a 3-0 score for the Lady Pirates.

Wilson and Neveah Murphey led the offense with 3 hits apiece.

Hooper took the win on the mound, tossing 15 strikeouts and allowing only 4 hits.

Marshall Reeves kept the Horns off the bases during the early part of the game and looked to go deep into the game. Shepherd fell behind mid-game 11-3 but managed to post 4 more runs.

On April 16, Shepherd lost to Tarkington 4-3.
