Kirbyville falls to Coldspring in district matchup

COLDSPRING —On Friday night the Coldspring Trojans opened their district season by stunning the Kirbyville Wildcats 50-12.

The Wildcats were stunned by the Trojans’ high-octane offense and wall-like defense during the opening quarter and spent the entire game at the mercy of Coldspring.

The Trojans put up 20 points to the Wildcats 0 in the first quarter, to be answered only by a Hail Mary pass near the end of the half for the Cats’ first score of the night.

It all was downhill from there.

Head Coach Ken Stanley said, “I am very proud of the overall growth of our team. We have a great opportunity, if we can eliminate some mistakes, to be a really good team.”

The Trojans posted 425 total yards with 348 coming on the ground. Cookie McGowen had 17 yards with 2 TDs for the night, and Tyga Parker posted 224 yards rushing and 3 TDs and had one 2-point conversion. David Rowe had 29 yards rushing and went 5 of 8 in the air for 77 yards and 1 TD. Xzander Roberts posted 11 yards rushing and a 2-point conversion.

Coldspring will travel to Orangefield Friday for the second district game.

“Our kids have been battling injuries all year,” he said. “We just played more physical up front. Our lineman and backs were the difference.”
