 The Lady Jackets moved to 4-2 in district with a victory over the Leggett Lady Pirates and a tough loss to the Chireno Lady Owls last week. 

 The Lady Jackets defeated Leggett on Tuesday, Jan. 11 by a score of 38-35, even with three starters out due to illness.  Freshman Abby Grimes led the team in scoring with 13 points. Saydi Handley was close behind with 11 points.  Kyli Handley scored six points, and Trinity Jerkins and Kat Knox each scored four points. The Lady Jackets lost to the Chireno Lady Owls in front of a home crowd on Friday, Jan. 14 by a score of 13-67.  Emma Grimes led with four points, Abby Grimes scored three points, and Kat Knox, Saydi Handley, and Kyli Handley each scored two points.

 The Lady Jackets will travel to Zavalla for a 6 p.m. game against the Lady Eagles on Friday, Jan. 21. 

 The team will be at home on Tuesday, Jan. 25 as they host the Burkeville Lady Mustangs. Game time is 6 p.m.

‘Jackets take on

 Pirates, Owls

 The Yellowjackets had a tough week of basketball as they took on both the Leggett Pirates and the Chireno Owls.  The Jackets were defeated by the Pirates on Tuesday, Jan. 11. 

 Freshman P.J. Purvis led with eight points.  Luke Read scored seven points, Jack Rayburn scored six points, and Carson Thomson scored five points.  Rick Carlton had four points for the night, and Kaighnen Green scored three points.  Bradley Davison added a free throw. 

 The Jackets lost to the Chireno Owls at home last Friday by a score of 25 to 71.  Jack Rayburn scored 16 points, Rick Carlton scored four points, Luke Read and Bradley Davison each scored two points, and Carson Thomson contributed a free throw. 

 The Jackets will travel to Zavalla on Friday, Jan. 21 to take on the Eagles.  The game will begin around 7:15 p.m., or after the girls’ game.  The Jackets will be at home on Tuesday, Jan. 25 as they host the Burkeville Mustangs.  Tip off will be around 7:15p.m.

 Both junior high boys and girls basketball teams defeated Colmesneil last week.

Eagles play Warriors

The Woodville Eagles travelled across the county to play their in-county district rivals the Warren Warriors last week. Both schools’ boys and girls teams played each other in the Warriors’ court last Tuesday. The Eagles and Warrior boys had a close game, with the Eagles winning 49-42 Eagles senior Jaylin Kibble and junior Julius Thrower led their team in scoring, with 15 and 12 points, respectively, per player. Kibble also led the Eagles in rebounds (4) and steals (3). The Warriors are now 10-12 overall, and 0-2 in district. They played Anahuac on Tuesday and are set to play East Chambers on the road on Friday, with tip-off at 7:30 p.m. On Jan. 28, they play Woodville again, on the Eagles’ court. The Lady Eagles won against the Lady Warriors (48-24) and sport a 21-4 overall record with a first place spot in district (5-0).

The Yellowjacket basketball team returned after the break with a well-earned victory over the Baytown Christian Bulldogs last Thursday, Dec. 30. 

 The game started out slowly for the Jackets, as they trailed the Bulldogs 3-17 at the end of the first quarter. The shots began to fall for the Jackets in the second quarter, as they outscored Baytown Christian and headed into the locker room at halftime trailing by just seven points.  The second half was very tight, with the score neck and neck all the way to the final seconds, with Chester winning 53-51.  Coach Justin Hilliard was pleased with his team.  “Coming out after the holiday break with a few players out and fighting so hard after being down just shows how bad these boys want to win,” Hilliard said. 

 Jack Rayburn led with an impressive 27 points.  Rayburn hit eight 3-pointers during the game.  Carson Thompson ended the game with 10 points, with eight points in the fourth quarter alone.  Luke Read scored six points, Bradley Davison and Keighen Green both scored four points, and Kaighnen Green scored two points. 

 The Jackets will host Good Samaritan Fred on Friday, Jan. 7 around 8 p.m., after the conclusion of the girls’ game.  The Jackets will travel to Leggett on Tuesday, Jan. 11 to play a district game against the Pirates.  The game will start at approximately 6:30p.m., or after the conclusion of the girls game.

 The Lady Jackets also got a win last week.  The Lady Jackets defeated Baytown Christian 38-27.  The girls started the game sluggish and did not play their best during the first half.  However, they came out of the locker room and took care of business. 

 Coach Justin Hilliard said, “The girls showed resilience against Baytown Christian, which is encouraging.”  Hilliard added that even with a few key players out due to illness, the girls fought hard and never gave up. 

 Lily Read led in scoring with 17 points.  Abby Grimes scored 10 points.  Emma Grimes and Sydney Brock each scored four points, and Kat Knox scored two points. 

 The Lady Jackets face Good Samaritan Fred at home on Friday, January 7.  The game will start at 6:30 p.m.  The Lady Jackets will be on the road on Tuesday, January 7 as they travel to Leggett for a district game against the Lady Pirates. The game will start at 6 p.m.

 The junior high teams will be at home on Thursday, Jan. 6, as they host Apple Springs.  Game time for junior high girls will be 5 p.m., with the boys game to follow.

Football season has been over for several weeks, and all-district selections have been announced.  The Jackets received one superlative as Rick Carlton was named Newcomer of the Year. 

 First team all-district selections went to Carsyn Whitworth (RB), Miles Redwine (LB), Jackson Knox (OL), Carson Thomson (S), Kessler Romo (WR), Jeff Knox (DL), Jaxson Hilliard (C), and Keighen Green(RB).  Second team all-district went to Peanut Fann (LB), Zayne Barnhart(Utility), Kaighnen Green(DE), Payton Lacox (CB), Miles Redwine (RB), Carson Thomson (QB), Kessler Romo (CB), Cutter Lowe (OL), and Will Thomason (OL).  Colton Pursley (DL), Ethan Vinson (DL), and P.J. Purvis (RB) received Honorable Mention. 

 Miles Redwine, Carsyn Thomson and Jackson Knox also received Honorable Mention Academic All-State. 

 The Lady Jackets have a week of district play under their belt and are now 2-1 in District 28.  The loss came against Zavalla last Tuesday, Dec. 14, as the Lady Jackets lost at home in a close game.  The girls defeated Burkeville on the road on Friday, Dec. 17. 

 The Lady Jackets will have a long break, as they will be off until Tuesday, Jan. 4, as they host the Goodrich Lady Hornets in a 6 p.m. game. The Yellowjackets dropped their first district game to the Burkeville Mustangs on Friday, Dec. 17. 

 The Yellowjackets will have some time off for Christmas before returning to the gym on Thursday, Dec. 30 to face Baytown Christian at home. Tip off will be at 7:30 p.m.   

 The Chester Junior High Basketball teams hosted Spurger in three games on Monday, Dec. 13.  The seventh-grade boys lost their game to the Pirates.  However, both the junior high girls and eighth grade boys defeated the Pirates. The junior high will play next on Thursday, January 6 as they face Apple Springs at home starting at 5 p.m.

The Chester Lady Jackets had a big week.  They opened district with a win on the road against the High Island Lady Cardinals. The Jackets won by a score of 33-28. 

Lily Read led with 16 points. Kat Knox ended the night with seven points and Kyli Handley had six points.  Lexi McDonnold had a 3-pointer and Saydi Handley scored two points.      

 The Lady Jackets competed in the Deweyville Tournament Dec. 9-11 and came away with a third-place trophy. The girls defeated Colmesneil in their first game 29-21. Lily Read led the team with 11 points. Emma Grimes and Sydney Brock ended the game with six points each.  Trinity Jerkins and Kyli Handley each contributed two points. Kat Knox and Abby Grimes each scored a free throw.  The Lady Jackets were defeated by Starks 21-64 in game two of the tournament. Lily Read was high point for her team with 10 points. Abby Grimes scored four points.  Emma Grimes, Sydney Brock, and Kyli Handley all ended the game with two points, and Lexi McDonnold scored a free throw. The Lady Jackets defeated Burkeville on game three of the tournament by a score of 38-20. 

 Saydi Handley led the Lady Jackets with seven points. Trinity Jerkins scored six points. Sydney Brock, Kat Knox, Lily Read, Faith Jerkins, Emma Grimes, Abby Grimes and Kyli Handley all contributed points. 

 The Lady Jackets lost their game against Deweyville on Saturday 21-35, knocking the team out of the tournament.  Lily Read led her team again with 11 points. Sydney Brock scored six points, Kyli Handley scored three points, and Kat Knox added a free throw. The Lady Jackets ended the tournament with two wins, two losses, and the third-place trophy. Lily Read was named All-Tournament.

 The Lady Jackets travel to Burkeville on Friday, Dec. 17 to play against the Lady Mustangs. Game time is 3 p.m. Then on Monday, Dec. 20, the Lady Jackets will host the Warren Lady Warriors in a 1:30 p.m. game. 

 The Yellowjackets played in the Deweyville Tournament Dec. 10. Three games in an afternoon took its toll on the Jackets, as they ran out of steam in the third game. But the team got some good play time, and areas of weakness were identified by Coach Justin Hilliard. This came at a good time, as the Jackets start district play at the end of this week. 

 The Jackets lost game one to the Deweyville Pirates 19-42. Rick Carlton led the Yellowjackets with six points. Luke Read and Carson Thomson scored four points apiece, Jack Rayburn scored three points, and Kaighnen Green contributed two points.  The Jackets lost game two to Colmesneil 44-54 in a game that was a battle up until the end. Carson Thomson ended the game with 16 points. Jack Rayburn scored 13 points. Keighen Green scored six points, Rick Carlton scored five points, and Luke Read added two baskets. The Jackets were defeated in their final game of the tournament against Starks by a score of 32-41. 

 Rick Carlton led the team with 11 points. Luke Read and Carson Thomson both score four points. Jack Rayburn and Keighen Green both scored three points. Cutter Lowe, Bradley Davison, and Jeff Knox scored a basket apiece, and Kaighnen Green contributed a free throw. 

 The Yellowjackets will be on the road on Friday, Dec. 17 as they will face the Burkeville Mustangs to open district play. Game time is around 4:15 p.m., or after the conclusion of the girls’ game.  The Jackets will host the Colmesneil Bulldogs on Monday, Dec. 20 at 12:30 p.m. 

 The junior high girls lost their game on Monday, Dec. 6 to Good Samaritan Fred by a score of 8-15. The boys were off last week. 

 The junior high boys and girls will have a few weeks off for Christmas break.  They will be back in action on Thursday, Jan. 6 as they host Apple Springs. The girls will tip off at 5 p.m., and the boys’ game will follow.
