The Woodville Lady Eagles are in it to win it, with a tie-breaker District win against Huntington last week, winning 3 games to the Lady Red Devils’ 2 (scores were: 15-25; 17-25; 25-23; 25-17 and 15-9). Lady Jacket volleyball clinched an undefeated district championship with an easy sweep of Leggett on Tuesday. Scores were 25-4, 25-2, and 25-3. Lily Read had 10 kills, Lauren Citrano had nine kills and Kinsley Barnes had seven kills. Emma Byrd led in assists with 29 and also had 10 aces. Lauren Citrano led in aces with 13.

The Lady Jackets traveled to Garrison for a warm-up game to prepare for the upcoming playoff season. The Lady Bulldogs put up more of a fight than the Lady Jackets have seen in district, taking the Jackets to four sets. The Lady Jackets won the first 2 sets 25-16 and 25-23.

The Lady Bulldogs won the third set 23-25. The fourth and final set of the night went to the Lady Jackets 25-20. Marae Pounds had a good night on the net with six blocks, she also had five kills and two aces. Emma Byrd had a pair of aces on 20 serves with no errors, and 41 assists.

Sydney Brock had two aces with 39 digs and 32 service receptions. Lily Read led in attacks with 24 kills and had 28 digs, 24 service receptions. Kinsley Barnes ended the night with 14 kills, eight digs. The Lady Jackets will play for the Area Championship on Thursday Nov. 2, at Crockett High School beginning at 6 p.m. They will play the winner of the Bi-District round out of McDade or North Zulch.

‘Jackets take on Leveretts Chapel

The Yellowjacket football team traveled to Leveretts Chapel on Friday night for a chance at a district championship. The Yellowjackets competed for four full quarters but ultimately came up short in a high scoring game of 98-66. Keighen Green had 11 carries for 130 yards with three touchdowns. Trayce Knox went six for 12, 68 yards, two touchdowns, one interception, four carries for three yards, and six tackles.

Jesse Bittick had 10 carries for 43 yards and eight tackles. Jaxon Gay in his first game of the season after injury had eight carries for 111 yards, three touchdowns, three tackles, and a play break up. Kasen Citrano had two catches for 12 yards, a touchdown from interception, and a tackle.

Zach Redwine had two catches for 33 yards, one touchdown, two tackles, and a broken play. PJ Purvis helped on defense with four tackles and broke two plays. Cutter Lowe had three catches for 26 yards and one touchdown. Jayse Gay and Bryson Swanson each had one carry and one assist. Turner Johnson went one for one with three yards. Rex Gilzow and Blake Zulpo pitched in on a couple of tackles each.

The Yellowjackets travel to High Island this week to try and clinch a playoff spot. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

The junior high team will also play in High Island before the varsity game.

Dogs vs. Rebels

Bulldogs Rebels

The Colmesneil Bulldogs hosted the Evadale Rebels for homecoming last Friday. In spite of a series of penalties, the Rebels had bested the Bulldogs 28-8 by the half, but fortunes improved a bit for the ‘Dogs in the second half, with touchdowns from Caden Shepherd and JW Mitcham. The Rebels got the 42-24 win. Colmesneil hosts the Hull-Daisetta Bobcats this Friday, with action starting at 7 p.m.  CHRIS EDWARDS | TCB

Warriors vs. Hornets

The Warren Warriors played the Hemphill Hornets on Warrior territory last Friday night. Hemphill left town with the 24-18 win, but the Warriors shone on both sides of the ball in this close game. Warriors’ outside linebacker Marek Christy is shown in action on Friday night. Defensively, the Warriors were led by senior lineman Sam Spurlock, who notched 18 total tackles (10 of them solo); one tackle for loss and one QB hurry. All told, the Warriors ran for 276 yards on 57 plays. The Warriors hold a 3-5 overall record and are set to take on the Trinity Tigers this Friday, with a 7 p.m. kick off in Trinity. The Lady Jacket volleyball team had two games on the road this week, sweeping both Spurger and Goodrich in three sets each.

Tuesday in Spurger the Lady Pirates put up a fight in the first and second sets with scores of 25-17, 25-18. On the third set the Lady Jackets turned up the heat and put a quick end to the match with a score of 25-5. Lily Read led in kills with 21 and digs with 9. Kinsley Barnes was behind her with 8 kills, 6 digs, and 3 aces. Marae Pounds also had 8 kills and 3 aces. Lauren Citrano also had 3 aces, 8 kills, and 6 digs. Sydney Brock led in service receptions with 15 and included 8 digs for defense. On offense Brock had 2 aces and 1 assist.  Emma Byrd led in assists with 37. Byrd also had 5 digs, 3 kills, and 1 ace. The JV Lady Jackets also swept the Lady Pirates in their final game of the season. 

The Lady Jackets ended the week in Goodrich defeating the Lady Hornets 25-10, 25-13, and 25-12. Specific stats were not available. The Lady Jackets will celebrate Senior Night Tuesday Oct. 24 against Leggett at home.

This game ends district play and they finish the season as District Champions awarding them a first round bye in the playoffs. The Lady Jackets will play the Garrison Lady Dogs for a warm-up game on Friday, Oct. 27 at 4:30 p.m. in Garrison.


‘Jackets celebrate Senior Night

Yellowjacket football celebrated Senior night by playing their first district game this week against Burkeville.

During the pregame, Will Thomason was presented with his State Championship golf trophy for his accomplishment last spring.

Betty Ann Whitworth, Chester ISD Librarian, was honored for her fight against breast cancer with flowers and several compliments made by students and staff were read from the press box. Ms. Betty Ann or “Bebe” as everyone calls her, was designated as Honorary Captain and flipped the coin to start the game. The Jackets came out in full swarm defeating the Mustangs 67-26. The game started well for the Mustangs when they scored on their first play after the kickoff. The Yellowjackets quickly answered with a touchdown of their own by Keighen Green on their first play of the game. The Jackets had the better defense of the night with a leading contribution by Jesse Bittick with15 tackles, 2 forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. Kasen Citrano with 5 tackles and a forced fumble. Zach Redwine and Waylon Sturrock each had 6 tackles. On offense Keighen Green led with 16 rushes for 203 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also had 4 catches for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns. Trayce Knox was 9 for 17 on passing for 250 yards, had 4 touchdowns and one interception. Kasen Citrano had 3 catches for 64 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Bittick had 8 rushes for 61 yards. Zach Redwine had two catches for 50 yards. Cutter Lowe had 1 touchdown reception by Turner Johnson. During halftime the Chester ISD Seniors were honored by walking onto the field with their parents as their high school accomplishments were read. Football Sweetheart, voted on by the football team, was awarded to Emma Byrd.

“Mr. Spirit,” which was voted on by the cheerleaders, was awarded to Zach Redwine. The Yellowjackets are 1-0 in district and 4-4 on the season. Friday Oct. 27 they will travel to Leveretts Chapel for their second of three district games. Kickoff is scheduled for 7p.m.
