TxDOT seeking public comment for US 69 relief project

Representatives from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) hosted two public meetings last week for citizens to review materials and ask questions about the US 69 Woodville-Colmesneil Relief Route.

The first meeting was held at the Kirby Gym in Woodville, Tuesday, Oct. 24, and a second meeting was held at the Warren ISD board room on Thursday, Oct. 26.

A large crowd turned out for both of the meetings, which allowed Tyler County residents the opportunity to review the project’s specifics, as they stand, and ask questions.

TxDOT Beaumont District is proposing to construct a US 69 Relief Route from approximately one mile south of Black Creek to approximately one mile south of Recreational Road 255 in Tyler County.

The approximate 25 -mile project would include a new location roadway. The roadway south of US 190 would include two 12-foot travel lanes in each direction, a northbound 13-foot outside shoulder to be used as an evacuation lane, a southbound 10-foot outside shoulder, and two frontage roads in each direction that would require approximately 400 feet of right of way width.

The purpose of the US 69 project is to provide a relief route for safe and efficient south/north movement between Colmesneil and Warren. TxDOT is trying to address the following problems with this project: Providing an evacuation route, improving safety by providing a relief route to reduce congestion, demand from freight traffic, and providing an alternate route from south of Warren to north of Colmesneil.

The proposed project schedule includes virtual public meetings with in-person options in October (Woodville and Warren meetings), Draft Preliminary Design and Draft Environmental Assessment (Fall 2024), Public hearings in Winter 2024, Environmental Decision in Spring 2025, Begin ROW Acquisition, and Finalize Design and begin phased construction.
