SPLENDORA — Reigning state champ powerlifter Kailyn Fisher of Trinity took first place and was the overall winner during the Splendora Powerlifting Meet on Saturday.

Kailyn had lifts of 415, 435 and 450 pounds in the deadlift on her way to the top spot. After the first week of competition, she holds the top spot in the region and the state.

Centerville falls to Neches

CENTERVILLE — The Bulldogs apparently took too long of a break over the holidays, as their play suffered and they lost 53-44 to the Neches Tigers on Friday.

Head Coach Geoff Hollis said that the team had not played since Dec. 17 and was extremely rusty, not playing well at all. 

The Bulldogs were down 16-4 at the end of the first quarter, but fought back to a 28-18 deficit at halftime. 

At the third, Neches led only by eight and fourth quarter (53-44) were pretty even. 

“This definitely was a tough loss,” he said.

Our Tuesday matchup at Apple Springs was called off due to COVID concerns.

Groveton

GROVETON — The Indians lost to the Slocum Mustangs 52-31 on Friday.

The loss puts Groveton at 3-13 overall and 1-1 in district.

On Dec. 4, the Indians downed the Latexo Tigers 43-24.

Trinity

COLDSPRING — The Trinity Tigers lost their district match against Coldspring-Oakhurst 69-62 on Friday.

Standouts were Terius Maxie with 26 points, Tristian Martinez with 13 and Zylan Woods with 12.

On Dec. 4, the Tigers beat Anderson-Shiro 45-32.

The Tigers’ record stands at 6-14 overall and 1-2 in district play.

Groveton

LATEXO —The Lady Indians defeated the Lady Tigers 56-24 on Dec. 4.

Trinity

COLDSPRING — The Trinity Lady Tigers lost 61-38 against the Coldspring-Oakhurst Lady Trojans on Jan. 7.

Top scorer was Nevaeh Craft with 19 points, followed by Dayanara Martinez with 6, and Diara Woods and Shauna English with 5 apiece.

On Dec. 4, the Lady Tigers fell to the Anderson-Shiro Lady Owls 70-48.

GROVETON — The Groveton Lady came from behind in the first half and stayed dominant through the second to down the Coldspring-Oakhurst Lady Trojans 39-29.

Top scorers for the game were Kiki Smith and Tatum Porter with 10 points each, Bre McQueen with 7 points, Isavel Bautista with 5 points, Maddy Thomas with 3 points and Lexia Blanks with 2 points.

McQueen and Smith grabbed 2 steals each; Isavel Bautista pulled in 13 rebounds; McQueen had 3 assists; and Porter added 3 blocks.

On Dec. 28, the Lady Indians fell to Wells 43-27 in district play.

Top scorers for Groveton were Porter with 11 points, McQueen with 10 points, and Anahi Chavez with 4 points.

Porter pulled down 7 rebounds, while Chavez picked up 5 rebounds; Ingrid Gonzalez added 3 steals.

On Dec. 17, Groveton edged out the Grapeland Lady Sandies 47-40.

Top scores were Porter with 16,  Kiki Smith with 14, McQueen with 8 and Anahi Chavez with 6 points.

Smith nabbed 5 steals to McQueen’s 3; and Porter pulled down a whopping 18 rebounds, Bautista had 10, and Hannah Spurgeon contributed. 

Boys

Trinity

CROCKETT — The Trinity Tigers went 0-4 at the Houston County Holiday Classic, held Dec. 28-30 in Crockett.

Trinity lost to Flatonia 61-55, lost to Palestine 58-25, lost to Grapeland 70-49 and lost to Maypearl 52-35.

Groveton

WELLS — On Dec. 28, the Groveton Indian lost to the Wells Pirates 56-47.

Apple Springs

OVERTON — The Apple Springs Eagles went 2-2 during the Overton Basketball Tournament held Dec. 28-30.

The Eagles lost to Zavalla 61-28 and to Overton 55-29, but won 50-45 against Trinity Christian Academy and 57-50 against Fruitvale.

CENTERVILLE — The Eagles hosted Oakwood on Dec. 17 to open district play and  ended up on the right side of a 70-43 game.

Coach Greg Hollis said Centerville jumped out to an early lead, but Oakwood closed out the first half strong, erasing a 9-point lead with 2 minutes to go to tie it up at 25-25 at halftime. 

The Bulldogs pulled way ahead in the third quarter outscoring Oakwood 30-10 to bring it to 55-35 going into the fourth. A tough, physical second half led to four Oakwood players fouling out, leading to a final score of 70-43. 

Hollis said it was a breakout game for both junior Ayden Self, who had 22 points, and senior Devin Capps, who had 20 points. The two helped propel Centerville to a 1-0 district record. 

Senior Logan Whittlesey contributed 15 points and junior Jerry White chipped in 10 points. 

The Bulldogs face cross county rival Apple Springs on the road on Jan. 4 to resume district play after the break. 

Groveton

GROVETON — The Indians lost 66-40 to the Onalaska Wildcats on Dec. 20. 

The Lady Indians downed the Grapeland Lady Sandies to move to 1-1 in district on Dec. 17.

PALESTINE — The Groveton Lady Indians ended up with a third-place finish in the Palestine Westwood Tournament held Dec. 11.

The scoring was Groveton 44, Crossroads 57; Bre McQueen had 17 points and 6 steals; Kiki Smith 18 points; Hannah Spurgeon 9 rebounds; and Tatum Porter 8 rebounds.

Groveton 64, Westwood 17: Smith had 28 points and 9 steals; McQueen 10 points; Spurgeon 8 points; Isavel Bautista 9 points and 10 rebounds; Maddy Thomas 5 points; Tatum Porter 4 points, 13 rebounds and 7 blocks; and Ingrid Gonzalez 7 rebounds.

Groveton 53 Eustace-2 12: McQueen 12 points, 4 rebounds and 3 assists; Spurgeon 10 points; Porter 9 points and 8 rebounds; Anna LaRue 4 points and 5 rebounds; Anahi Chavez 4 points, 4 steals and 2 assists; Smith 4 points; Bautista 4 points; Thomas 4 points; Lexia Blanks 2.

Groveton 16, Mexia 40: Spurgeon 3 points and 6 rebounds, Smith 4 points and 13 rebounds, Bautista 3 points, Porter 6 points, 7 blocks and 6 rebounds; Maddy Thomas 4 rebounds; McQueen 3 assists.

Groveton 41, Crossroads 31: McQueen had 10 points; Smith 19 points; Porter 5 points and 6 rebounds; and Spurgeon 5 rebounds.

On Dec. 3, Groveton lost to Huntington 38-33. McQueen had 12 points; Smith 15 points and 7 rebounds; Porter 8 rebounds; and Gonzalez 2 steals.

Apple Springs

The Lady Eagles lost their district opener 59-25 against Kennard on Dec. 14.

Trinity

The Lady Tigers lost a district game against New Waverly 86-41 on Dec. 14.

Boys

Apple Springs

The Eagles won a pre-district game against Grapeland JV on Dec. 14 53-37.

Centerville

On Dec. 17, the Centerville Bulldogs defeated Founders Christian 70-43.

Groveton

On Dec. 14, the Indians lost to Neches 57-49.

Trinity

On Dec. 17, Trinity lost to Hardin 51-49.
