Early start forfire season

GROVETON — The Groveton Volunteer Fire Department battled a small blaze on Thursday, caused by a downed power line.

The fire broke out off of Magee Bend Loop, and the GVFD used their brush truck to protect nearby structures, Fire Chief Glenn Hammond said.

In order to keep the fire from spreading, the Texas Forest Service was called in to use graders to build fire breaks, he said.

About 6 acres were burned, Hammond said.
