Do you remember when school always started the first day after Labor Day? Well then you are from the same generation as me. Now most schools start in August, and some schools even go year-round. Apple Springs changed their school week to four days and they received an academic rating of A this year. What does that mean?
•The major event for the last Thursday of September to Oct. 1 is the community fair and with this heat I do not know how the students and their animals have fared. Last year we did not have that many projects due the economy and the pandemic, but hopefully this year will be better for everyone.
The Trinity Buyers Group needs your donations to purchase the animals that the children have worked hard to raise this year. By feeding them, walking, grooming, and training them to get ready for the show at the 73rd Trinity Community Fair, they have spent a lot of hours after school in this preparation. So, please call Theresa or George Gallagher at (936) 661-5707 to help support our children and their hard work and efforts.
•So, with this admonishment, I am announcing an invitation to all you 42 domino players to join us on Sept. 30 at Joseph’s Restaurant for the 73rd Fair Day’s 42 Tournament, with registration starting at 9 a.m. and the first game beginning at 10 a.m. Lunch break will begin around noon. Games will resume at 1 p.m. and continue until 3 p.m. Awards will be given as soon as winners are announced, and pictures will be taken of the winners at this time.
Cash prizes will be given for first-, second-, and third-place winners. Snacks and beverages will be available during breaks, and a $10 entry fee includes the lunch buffet. For more information, please call Daisy Holland at (936) 594-9004 or Julia McMichael at (936) 537-8171.
•The Trinity Lions Club is now meeting on Wednesdays at noon in the Trinity Peninsula Chamber of Commerce building located at 103 Stadium Street. We meet on the first and third Wednesday of each month, and if any month has five Wednesdays of that month we meet then also. We are still planning our events for 2022-23, and we have some wonderful speakers planned for September and October.
At this time, we have an eye exam scheduled for every student in the TISD campuses during the month of November. Charles Payne is our eyeglass chairman, and his telephone number is (936) 377-2988 or (281) 705-7675. Parents, please call if you need financial help to obtain glasses for your children or have the school nurse call Charles Payne for an application and a request.
•With the picture in the paper last week of the Martin Senior Citizen Center barbecue fundraiser’s sandwich ad, it was a huge success. The Center for the first time in two years can pay all its staff and utility bills without having to borrow money from other organizations. The Good Samaritan House has been very benevolent helping with our elder citizens with the water and light bills and we are very appreciative of their support.
The delivered meals have gone on without interruptions due to the community’s donations, and we thank you, Trinity residents, for supporting our center and our shut-ins.
The Old Timers BBQ fundraiser will turn up the charcoal again in September to help feed this group of people and I will give you more details about this later. Tentatively, the next fundraiser date is set for Sept. 17 at 400 Walker St. in Trinity.
•The VFW will be hosting a blood drive for the community on Sept. 10 at the post’s circular drive on 401 Caroline St. beginning at 9 a.m. The blood truck is scheduling times for your donations, so please call Judy Henderson at (512) 934-4336 or Dawn Bray at (936) 355-3634 to set up your time to come by and donate your much-needed blood. The VFW is another organization that helps the Trinity community with their needs and activities yearly.
More blood drives are planned for September and December by the Knights of Columbus organization of the Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church, but I do not have the times and dates yet.
•On Sept. 19, First United Methodist Church is hosting its monthly Spaghetti Dinner in the fellowship hall at 131 N. Elm St. from 4 to 7 p.m. The meal consists of spaghetti, salad, bread, dessert, and drinks for a participant’s donation. •On Sept. 24, the 356 VFD is hosting its annual Fall Family Day Fish Fry and Auction from 11 a.m.-6 p.m. at the fire station on FM 356s. Donations are needed for the auction, so please contact Brandy McCann at (936) 662-7400 to contribute and to purchase tickets which are $12 a plate.
•October is one of the busiest months in Trinity for school and community events. Oct. 1 is the second day of the last free fair in East Texas, which will host the usual inside and outside booths, carnival, food, and music. So, watch this space for more details about this month’s activities.
I will be sending out applications to our Nov. 12 Founders’ Day vendors booths. Call me if you don’t get one.
On Oct. 6, Trinity Tabernacle Assembly of God Church’s Diaper Pantry is giving away free diapers from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The church is located at 1420 N. State Highway 19 in Trinity. The distribution lasts until the diapers are given away until 1 p.m. Other distribution days are Nov. 3 and Dec. 1. For more information call the church office.
•Oct. 7 is Homecoming Night at THS with the ceremony starting at 7 p.m. and the game starting after that presentation. Our football game is versus Hardin ISD.
•The third weekend in October is Most Holy Trinity Catholic Church’s fall festival. On Oct. 15, a dinner and a bingo event will start at 5 p.m. in the fellowship hall, located at 401 Prospect Drive. On Oct. 16, the family festival starts at 11 a.m. with the usual, games, bounce houses, food vendors, arts and crafts booths, and music presented for your enjoyment. Melinda Fitzgerald is chairman of this event.
