Fundraising not just a trivial matter

Did you know that Friends of Shepherd Library are hosting a fundraiser Team Trivia Night? This is a chance to have some fun with your friends and/or family team. This event is family-friendly and includes other games, a silent auction and music. Snacks and sodas will be offered, and all proceeds go to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library for both libraries in our county.

Tickets are $10 if you register early, $15 at the door. It will run from 7-10 p.m. Friday at Coldspring Community Center, 101 E. Cedar Ave. Bill Powell, well-known DJ in our area, will host the Team Trivia. Register at Shepherd library, call (936) 628-3515.

• The San Jacinto County Women’s League met last week with guest speaker Karen Smithson. Karen talked about social media at any age, how to connect and what can be gained from it.

Among those qualities she mentioned, learning from experts in many fields, hobbies and recipes, community news and making friends to overcome loneliness. Karen had starting walking to lose weight, which she accomplished so well she was wearing one of her daughters dresses.

The meal was catered by Julie Gray of Lucy’s Country Store & Tea Garden and was delicious. President Mary Ann Pittman led the business part of the lunch and the decoration theme by April Plunkett and her team was Halloween. The next meeting will be the second Thursday of November at 11:30 a.m. Guest speaker will be Charline Smith of Coldspring Senior Center.

•The Senior Center will have Fish Friday on Oct. 18, sponsored by SJCRadio.com. The owners, Dale Everitt and Charles Ballard, will be there. The Center has a lot of programs coming up, as well as the Line Dancing Class and Losing Weight group. They have DJ Ken Janek playing on Fridays from 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

•Oct. 26 will be Coldspring VFD Fire Fest. At 20 Hill Ave, starting at 10 a.m., there will be a gun raffle, silent auction, scarecrow contest, costume contest, free candy and family fun. Entry is free.

• The SJC Historical Commission will have its Annual Haunted House at the Jail Museum in Old Coldspring, just a short way from the Fire Station at 200 Slade St. Entry is $5 for children, $10 for adults and will be on Oct. 25-26. You can buy your Raffle ticket in the Courthouse Basement office of Carson Anderson, call her at (936) 653-2091. They are $10 each. Prizes include a fabulous custom-made guitar, a bigfoot quilt and an entertainment center.

• Here is something different: Daiquries To Go and Family Restaurant are holding a costume party on Nov. 2 from 5 p.m.- midnight. The theme is 60s, 70s and 80s Party. Choose your decade and dress up, or you can come as you are and enjoy the fun anyway. Cards, dominos and bingo at $1 a card are some of the evening’s program. Food and drink with a DJ to make the music will keep the evening lively. Located at 2700 S. Byrd Ave. in Shepherd, for information call (346) 988-5059.

• Saturday at Jones Auditorium the San Jacinto County Democratic Party held its first Fall Gala. Candidates Laura Jones for U.S. Representative District 8, Lauren Ashley Simmons for Texas House District 146, and Katherine Culbert for Railroad Commission spoke to the crowd and County Chair Dennis Ready and Joyceln Traylor introduced the speakers and spoke to the gathering.

Calandra Johnson was recognized and so was Kimberley Jones for the beautiful decorations and overall elegant look of the Hall. The food was catered by AMF Catering who did a marvelous meal, and the live auction went extremely well with the cakes brought by donors for bids. Several cakes made well over $150, all money will be used in our county, Dennis Ready told the packed auditorium.

Gregg Cones sang to the audience to loud applause with his rendering of “I’m a Believer.” Thanks to all those who worked hard to make the evening a success.

• Coldspring Chamber of Commerce hosts its 39th Wolf Creek Car, Truck and Bike Show Oct. 19-20. This event draws a lot of people. Food and drink and vendors add to the draw of many amazing vehicles on show. Call the Chamber for more information or go online to the website.
