New source of food coming to Shepherd

Houston Food Truck is partnering with First Baptist Church of Shepherd to bring a food truck four times a month from Sept. 23. The truck will be in the church parking lot and will start serving at 8 a.m.

People can come earlier of course and line up. You can stay in your car so the line will move through faster. The Rev. Chester Holloway has posted a short video on First Baptist’s Church Facebook page. The parking lot is large and for those who do not know, is located close to the railroad tracks at 10850 Highway 150 in Shepherd. Call (936) 628-3130.

The Food Truck will come on Sept. 23 and 30, and Oct. 7 and 15, (the 14th is a holiday). Holloway thanked Ken and Trelis Urban for their hard work to make it happen.

• The Women’s League held its first lunch of the fiscal year last Thursday. The tables were beautifully decorated, Lucy’s Country Kitchen catered the delicious meal, and our guest speaker was LaNora Purvis.

She talked about her life and how she had come to create a home for women with traumatic events in their lives. Some had addictions, some had been trafficked and some were escaping from abusive relationships. She set up a program which after finding 6 months were too short a time to bring the women out of their problems expanded it to a one-year program.

Called Heaven’s Army and located in Cleveland, she has been able to expand to a home for men which is run by her son Koltan Purvis. LaNora recently opened a coffee shop with lightly used resale goods in Shepherd. Last Saturday was the first day of a new event, a local farmers’ market. It attracted a lot of local vendors and buyers and will be a monthly affair. Homegrown fruit and vegetables, eggs, preserves and handmade crafts were on sale as well as a very popular baker with bread, kolaches, rolls, etc.
