SHEPHERD — It was standing room only as the two San Jacinto County rivals met in a very important match on Friday — the winner was to face Crockett for the district title.

After all was done, the Pirates took a 67-43 win over Coldspring-Oakhurst to tie Crockett and set up a tiebreaker.

Shepherd Coach Jeremy Bennett said, “The main deal tonight was we managed to secure a spot in the UIL playoffs. Where in the line we will be is still up for grabs.”

The Pirates posted a second win over Anderson-Shiro on Feb. 6, downing the Owls 47-41 and being second in district, tied with Crockett and one game ahead of Coldspring.

Top scorers were Brayden White with 24 and Tristen Cullum with 14.

For Coldspring, the Trojans dominated the Trinity Tigers 59-49 on Feb. 6.

It was a close first half as Trinty had the lead 28-26, and while Trinity had a 4-point lead at the end of the fourth, the Trojans found another gear quarter and took control of the game.

Coldspring posted 15 points to Trinity’s 9, which was the deciding factor of the game.

Jacorrion Jackson had 10 points while Luke Monroe posted 20 points. Karvar Hays had 3 and T.J. Johnson had 2. Kelvin Harden had 15 points while Eric Sykes had 4 points along with Bookie Barnes who had 5 points.

The Lady Trojans’ win on Feb. 6 spurred a Friday tiebreaker with Onalaska, one that Coldspring won 36-32, securing the team’s spot in the state playoffs.

Coldspring was to face Hitchcock in the bi-district rounds on Monday.

The path to the playoffs included a 49-28 win over the Trinity Lady Tigers.

The first quarter set the tempo for the game, with Coldspring ringing out 25 points in the first quarter to Trinity’s 6. The Lady Tigers only managed double-digit scoring in the second quarter.

Efreauna Bains posted 2 points while Shantel Goffney had 8 points. Camiya Hines had 3 points and Ella Phillips had 21 for the night and went an amazing 7 for 10 at the line. Honesti Bradford had 4 points and Akiah Harwig and Shaniyla Goffney rounded out the night with 11 points combined.
