Coldspring wins homecoming tilt

COLDSPRING — After sweeping Tarkington 51-0 and Trinity 48-0, the Trojans finally faced a challenge with the Huntington Red Devils.

COCISD faced a team that could push through the its defense, but only during the first half; after making a few alterations, the defense returned to hold the Red Devils scoreless in the second half en route to a 48-14 homecoming win on Friday. 

The opening drive set the tone of the game, as the Trojans managed to hold the Red Devils to a 3 and out. At the 5:15 mark in the first quarter the Trojans posted the first score of the night, with a nice run off-tackle for a 7-0 lead. 

The Red Devils did manage to move the ball the second set of downs but could not post any points.  They turned the ball back over to the Trojans with a pick six, and 14-0 lead.

Huntington completed a few passes and set up their first of two scores sending the score to 14-7. The Trojans answered back early in the second quarter with 9:26 on the clock sending the score to 21-7. With only 3:35 left on the clock, the Red Devils managed to post one more TD during the first half. 

The Trojans were not finished scoring, as they posted another TD for the first half. Huntington almost scored in the last few seconds of the first half, but the clock was on the Trojans side and ran out of time.  The Trojans went into halftime with 14-point lead and the scoreboard showing 28-14. 

The second half was a different game altogether. Coldspring showed a new plan of attack and with 1:46 on the clock, they posted another set of scores, 35 -14. Huntington did not have an answer for Trojan’s adjusted defense and could not figure a way to push through. 

The Trojans managed to score two more times during the second half sending the win of 48-14 — a wonderful win for homecoming.

In all, the Trojans posted 441 yards of offense.

This week the Trojans head north to Elkhart High School for another district matchup. Elkhart is sitting on a record of 0-3 in district, falling to Westwood, Crocket and Diboll.

Shepherd

SHEPHERD — The Pirates dropped a district match with the Madisonville Mustangs 27-18 on Friday.

Shepherd now holds a record of 2-4 (0-1 district).

Head Coach Miles Robison said Madisonville had a couple of big plays the first half that left the Pirates in a deficit, one they couldn’t make up for even with a strong second-half performance.

“We had a chance to take the lead and fumbled the football twice,” Robison said. “H.D. Green and Robert Thain both had some big runs.”

Green scored two TDs and two 2-point conversions on passes to Luke Moore. Landon Robbins had some good carries on plays up the middle. 

“Turnovers have cost us opportunities the past few weeks,” Robison said. “I thought the defense played well except on the couple of big plays they scored long TDs on.”

The Pirates now face Center in a home district game. Robison said they are very athletic and big up front, and as with the rest of the Pirate schedule, it’s a state-ranked team, which makes Shepherd’s record deceptive.
