The Polk County Commissioners Court approved updates to the Master Street Address Guide, specifically boundary roads necessitated following redistricting, during its regular meeting Tuesday. Effective Oct. 1, 2022, the first day of the new fiscal year, Precinct 1 will assume maintenance of all of the south end of Providence Road, from FM 1988 to Hwy. 146 South.  At the same time, Precinct 3 will assume maintenance of Old Israel Road and a portion of Darden Road up to Johnson Branch.

In related activity, the Court also approved Oct. 1 as the date the new road and bridge maintenance precincts will go into effect. Regarding the justice of the peace precincts, those became effective the day they were adopted, Nov. 12, 2021, with the exception of open cases which will remain where they are pending resolution of the cases.

Commissioners approved a sheriff’s request to submit an application to the U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance, for an evidence/procurement manager position. If approved, it would be a civilian position who would also serve as coordinator of the Crime Stoppers program. It is a one-year grant with the option to re-apply.

“This is a position we’ve been trying to establish since January. Because it’s a civilian position instead of a licensed peace officer it would free up a licensed peace officer to patrol the north end of the county from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays,” Polk County Sheriff Byron Lyons said.

Polk County Extension Agents Matthew March and Alyssa Puckett presented the annual report from the Polk County AgriLife Extension Office, boasting impressive numbers in spite of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Commissioners reviewed and approved personnel action form requests submitted since the last meeting and were apprised that there were no authorized emergency hirings.

Fiscal Year 2022 budget revisions and amendments, as presented by the county auditor’s office, were also approved.

In old business, Commissioners approved the minutes of the Dec. 28 regular meeting.

Items on the consent agenda included:

Approval of minutes of the Jan. 11 regular meeting;

Approval of schedule of bills;

Receipt of the county auditor’s monthly report, pursuant to Local Government Code Sec. 114.025;

Approval of sheriff’s request to submit application for participation in the Texas Law Enforcement Support Office “1033 Program;”

Approval of sheriff’s request to submit an application to the Office of the Governor Fiscal Year 2022 Criminal Justice Grant Program for Special Victims Officer;

Transfer 2015 Ford Explorer from the district attorney’s office to permits;

Approval of Lake Livingston Water Supply Corporation’s request for sanitary control easement on Rodgers Street located in Wiggins Village I Subdivision (William Beasley Survey, Abstract 4) in Precinct 2;

Ratification of approval of agreement with Deep East Texas Council of Governments for Solid Waste Program Grant;

Approve of extension to Bancorp South Equipment Finance Lease #26 (for eight 2021 Mack GR64F dump trucks) from Jan. 10 to April 10, with additional interest payment to be paid from the road and bridge capital leases fund;

Approval of interlocal agreements between Polk County and the Democratic and Republican parties for the county’s provision of election equipment and services for the March 1 primary election and (possible) run-off election as recommended by the county clerk;

Approval of the early voting schedule for the 2022 Democratic and Republican primary election to be held on March 1; and

Approval to file claim with the state comptroller, pursuant to Government Code, Sec. 61.0015(B), for reimbursement of a portion of the juror fees paid by Polk County during the period of Oct. 1-Dec. 31, 2021.

Pastor David Darden of New Beulah Baptist Church opened the meeting with prayer.
