IAH Secure Adult Detention Facility will focus on mental health and wellness through September as part of its “Fit for Life” initiative. The facility aims to help residents and staff understand and improve their mental health.

IAH officials said Fit for Life has been very effective for the residents and staff during the first two quarters of the year, as IAH has already implemented plans targeting healthy eating and fitness.

“Mental health is too often ignored or misunderstood. Mental health is as important as physical health. We’ve designed a program to help our residents and staff create lasting mental health improvement habits,” IAH Warden Alexander Sanchez said.

The 2022 campaign has one area of focus per quarter. The first quarter was healthy eating, the second quarter was fitness, the third quarter is mental health and the fourth quarter will be environmental health.

During the second quarter, residents were able to walk nearly 500 miles and staff walked nearly 275 miles during the facility’s “Walk-a-thon.”

“We are pleased with the progress we have seen through emphasizing healthy eating and fitness this year. We will continue prioritizing improvements in mental and physical health,” Sanchez said.
