The Spurger Lady Pirates are now first in district in tennis and the Pirates second place.
Spurger’s teams took those honors at the district tennis meet last week in Woodville. Spurger High School seniors Kendall Gray and Colton Jenkins returned to Spurger as district champions in the girls and boys singles competitions, respectively.
Joshua Grissom and Jillian Leasman earned the first-place medals for mixed doubles, and KayLynn Deckert and Jade Tucker earned the second place in girls’ doubles.
The meet was also a chance to shine for some newcomers to the Pirates’ tennis program. Mason McGallion and Alexis Drake brought home the silver for mixed doubles, and Ella Hatton earned the silver in the girls’ singles.
Pirate senior Tyler Callaway earned the bronze in boys’ singles and Nick Wilson and Noah Donatucci also earned third place medals in boys’ doubles.
During spring break, the Pirate and Lady Pirate tennis teams competed in the regional tournament in College Station.
Leasman; Grissom; Hatton; McGallion and Drake all fought hard but came up short in the first round.
However, Gray; Jenkins; Deckert and Tucker all made it to the quarter finals.
In Pirate and Lady Pirate track and field news, Spurger’s track teams competed in Zavalla for the 2022 District Meet.
Junior, Jose’ Jimenez is the District Champion for both the 3200-meter and 1600-meter Run. Freshman, Jade Tucker, is the District Champion in the 100-meter Hurdles. The entire boys team advanced to the Area meet along with Jade Tucker and Senior Katy Curry for the Lady Pirate Team.
Over the spring break, the Spurger high school track team competed at Area in Shelbyville. Four of the students advanced to regionals by placing in the top four.
Katy Curry placed fourth in the 800 meter, Jose Jimenez placed fourth in the mile, Josh Grissom placed third in the 800 meter, and Kade Ford placed fourth in Discus. Coby Anthony will also be competing at Regionals in the 300-meter hurdles.
