The Lady Eagles continued their dominating streak in district 22 of 3A Region III with a win last Friday over the Warren Lady Warriors. The Lady Eagles beat them 59-38 at the Eagle Summit.

Lady Eagles’ head coach Troy Carrell called the victory a “solid win” for the team and added that “every day is a chance to get better.”

The Lady Eagles’ overall season record is now at 27-4 and their district performance has been a perfect 11-0.

The Eagles also notched a victory over their in-county district rivals Warren on Tuesday. The boys posted a mighty 77-35 win over the Warriors.

Top scorers for the Eagles were juniors Kameron Wyatt and Julius Thrower with 15 points apiece; seniors Omari Lewis and Jaylin Kibble with 14 points each and junior Jatavian Taylor with 13. Lewis also led the Eagles in three-pointers against Warren, with four successful attempts.

The Lady Eagles and Eagles played Newton on Tuesday, with results unavailable at press time.

Following their trip to Newton, the Lady Eagles have two more regular season games left. The JV girls and boys and varsity girls and boys will play Buna on Friday, Feb. 4 at home.

For the Lady Eagles and Eagles, that game, which begins at 5 p.m., will be senior recognition night. After that, JV and varsity squads will play Kirbyville on the road on Tuesday, Feb. 8, beginning at 5 p.m.

The Eagles, who are standing at a 20-7 overall season record and 7-2 in district, will also play Anahuac and Kountze in the coming weeks to finish up their regular season, with games on Feb. 11 and 15, respectively.

Mannino places second in

Lewis Invitational

Woodville High School track and field standout Linus Mannino, a WHS senior, recently placed second in the high jump event at the annual Carl Lewis Invitational, held in Houston.

The meet, which is hosted by the University of Houston and named after the Olympic gold medalist, took place during a two-day period of Jan. 14-15. Mannino earned his silver medal with a height of 6’6”.

Mannino said he was “kind of nervous” at the event, as he hadn’t jumped in almost a year.

Last year, Mannino, along with classmate Kesean Paire, represented the Eagles in Austin at the UIL State Track Meet. Paire earned the gold in the boys’ wheelchair shot put and Mannino bronzed in the high jump.

Lady Eagles softball start scrimmages

The Lady Eagles softball girls got down to business with a couple of scrimmages last weekend to prep for what they hope will be another successful season.

They took down both Shepherd (6-1) and New Waverly (8-1) on Saturday.

The Lady Eagles put up four runs in the fourth inning against the Shepherd Lady Pirates. For that monumental inning, Lady Eagles Cassandra Perez, Kristina Nash and Mary Lassiter all sent runners across the plate with RBIs.

Nash led in pitching, and only gave up one run on two hits through four innings; struck out seven batters and walked one.

The Lady Eagles notched up three runs in the second inning against New Waverly. Nash doubled on a 1-2 count, and scored one run. Lassiter singled on the first pitch at bat, and scored twice.

The Lady Eagles later chalked up three more runs in the fourth inning, led by singles from Lassiter and Kajaigh Eckert.

They totaled 11 hits in the game, with Lassiter, Perez and Madison Wainwright each getting multiple hits for the Lady Eagles.

The girls are set to scrimmage again this Friday, against the Hudson Lady Hornets at Hudson, starting at 4:30 p.m. The regular season begins on Tuesday, Feb. 15 against Port Neches-Groves.
