City approves alley abandonment

SHEPHERD — The Shepherd Board of Aldermen approved vacating a portion of an alley at the request of a home builder.

Meeting in regular session on Nov. 8, the board gave its unanimous approval of the request by Chris Simmons, who is looking to building a home on the property.

Simmons’ request came because there were some inconsistencies with surveys done on the property over the years, and that was causing difficulties for Simmons with his mortgage company.

A second request from Simmons for abandonment of a piece of undeveloped property on Bell Street was tabled at the request of Simmons, who said he no longer had a need for it.

In other business, the board:

• canvassed votes from the Nov. 2 election, at which two aldermen — Curtis Ainsworth and C. Mark Porter — were re-elected to their posts, and along with new alderman Hayden Irwin were sworn into their positions;

• denied a request from Shaun Bergeron to place three manufactured homes in an area that is not zoned for the structures;

• nominated Steve Roberts and voted for candidates for the San Jacinto County Appraisal District; and

• gave authority to hire a utility/court clerk to fill an existing vacancy.
