Crockett girls soccer tuned up for their upcoming district campaign at the Westwood Lady Panther Tournament in Palestine.

In Thursday's matches, the Lady Bulldogs won their opener over Corrigan-Camden 4-0 and then fell to Kemp 4-2.

Returning Saturday, Crockett lost to New Summerfield 1-0 but closed out tourney action on a high note, beating Tatum 2-1.

The Lady Dogs (2-3) will wrap up their non-district schedule at home against Livingston next Tuesday and open district play at home on Friday, Jan. 27 against Westwood.

Crockett's opponents in District 16-4A are Hudson, Jacksonville, Madisonville, Palestine, Diboll, Palestine Westwood and Trinity.

Crockett's Jadyn Collins goes up for an electrifying slam dunk against Shepherd.

CROCKETT– Crockett varsity boys split with Coldspring and Shepherd in District 23-3A hoops matchups last week.

After falling to Coldspring 61-53 on the road Tuesday, the Bulldogs beat Shepherd 66-51 at home Friday and improved their district mark to 2-1.

The first quarter of Friday night's game with Shepherd (1-2) showed flashes of a barn burner as the Bulldogs knocked down four 3-pointers. Shepherd scored the last two buckets in the closing seconds to take a 20-17 lead.

"We were scoring, but we weren't making stops. Normally we defend well and don't make shots" said Crockett head coach Drae Murray.

Opening the second quarter with an 8-0 momentum-shifting run, Crockett outscored the Pirates 20-7 to take a 37-27 halftime lead. After two quick buckets by Courtney Byrd, Jadyn Collins electrified the dome with a steal and rim-rattling slam dunk. Another bucket by Byrd capped the 8-point outburst.

Shepherd scored first in the third quarter but Crockett answered with a 12-0 run to pull away 49-29 at the 5-minute mark. After baskets by Byrd and Jaroderick Holmes, the next eight points were courtesy of Collins. The senior scored on a lay-up and then heaved in back-to-back treys to complete the frenzy.

Crockett carried a 53-37 lead into the fourth and led by as much as 19 down the stretch.

Murray said earlier in the day he had expressed concern to assistant coach Brent Stephens about the absence of third quarter runs this season, so he was pleasantly surprised when the Bulldogs rattled off that 12-0 run early in the third.

"Last year we went on 22-6, 22-4 runs to start the second half. I've been dying for this team to come out in the third quarter and go on a big run. They did that tonight. It's funny because I just had this conversion," he said.

Byrd recorded a double-double with a team-high 21 points and 10 rebounds.

Collins, who drained three treys, finished with 18 points and 7 rebounds.

Antwaain Boston had 7 (1 trey) and Chase Ivey drained a pair of treys to finish with 6. Iverson Rischer and Holmes chipped in 4 apiece and Nate Ivey rounded out the scoring with a 3-pointer.

"We've got five guys who can really shoot the ball. We've been very inconsistent but tonight we had four guys making three-pointers," added Murray.

Shepherd was led by Jesse Valerie with 21 and Tristen Cullum with 13.

"We wanted to get off to a fast start like we did, maintain it throughout the game and put ourselves in position at halftime to go win the second half. We wanted to come out in the third quarter and get off to a fast start. We preach getting three stops in a row and scoring to force the other team to call time-out," Murray said.

Noting that Rischer had a big game defensively, Murray said, "He's probably one of the best defenders in the state, seriously. He's that good on the ball defending."

Murray cited Chase Ivey as an offensive spark plug. "He came in and hit those two threes in the first quarter and busted it open for us. That forced Shepherd to be more aggressive guarding us on the perimeter that created driving lanes. We were able to attack those driving lanes and drop it off inside to Courtney, who was a monster."

Collins was another key figure on offense, said the coach. "I've been telling Jadyn he's going to get a lot of attention because he's scoring so much. Just drop it off and share the ball a little bit. He did that tonight and it allowed those guys to make shots," said Murray.

"Once those gaps were bigger, Jadyn was able to get to the goal and finish all those lay-ups. He had that monster slam-dunk that brought energy to the gym and helped us out tremendously," the coach added.

Unlike Friday's game, the Bulldogs never got untracked against Coldspring.

"It was just one of those games where we could never go on a run. It was just back-and-forth the entire game. Neither team could pull away until late in the game when Coldspring was able to get the turnovers they needed and make the shots they needed," said Murray.

The Trojans led 17-15 after a quarter., 30-28 at the break and 45-42 at the end of three.

"Coldspring got the 50-50 balls and you could tell they just wanted it more. They were playing at home and they were playing Crockett, which always a rivalry-type game for both teams."

Collins paced the Bulldogs with 27 points, including a trey. He was 6-of-9 at the line.

"It was a weird game. Nobody played well for us individually, except for Jadyn on offense. I told him he could have played better defensively," said Murray.

Holmes canned 10, followed by Byrd with 9, Boston with 4 (1 trey) and Tyvon King with a 3-pointer,

Coldspring's Luke Monroe and Tyga Parker booked 16 points apiece and Eric Sykes tossed in 13.

After a trip to Onalaska, the Bulldogs have back-to-back home games against Tarkington on Friday and Trinity next Tuesday.

CROCKETT — Crockett Lady Bulldogs took care of business on the road and at home last week to boost their district record to 4-1.

Coach TaNesiah Johnson's squad cruised past Coldspring 52-39 in a Tuesday night road game and handled Shepherd 52-17 on their home court Friday.

Against Shepherd, the Lady Dogs zoomed out to 16-2 lead in the first quarter and took a 27-6 lead into halftime.

Leading 38-14 after three quarters, Crockett dominated the final eight minutes 14-3.

"We only outscored them 11-8 in the third quarter and that's not good. We don't need a halftime because we always seem to come out too flat," said Johnson.

Tocarra Johnson led the scoring with 20 and Tania Davis had 15.

Edrinette Simpson chipped in 5 while A'Naya Wooten and Naomi Taylor had 4 apiece. Ty'Reyanna Beasley and Keyonna Davis rounded out the scoring with 2 apiece.

Johnson noted that Simpson "stepped up as a freshman" to contribute points and hold Shepherd's second-best player No. 10 (Nelson ) to 7 points. "She helped us on defense and played the role I asked her to do, so the game ball would go to her," the coach said.

High percentage free throw shooting and a low number of turnovers put a smile on Johnson's face.

"I have to brag. I hope I don't jinx us but we shot 55 percent from the free throw line," said Johnson, whose team sank 12 of 22 against Shepherd in contrast to only hitting 10 of 27 (37 percent) in the Coldspring game.

The Lady Bulldogs had a season low of 21 turnovers. "We usually have that many in a half. We had 13 in the first half tonight and 8 in the second. That's an accomplishment," the coach said.

Tania Davis, Beasley, Wooten, Johnson and Taylor made up the starting five against Shepherd.

"I had to change my lineup because we're playing without my best defender who is grade ineligible. I honestly did not know how this game would go but we came around. We had to change and mold, which we could tell in spurts. The good part is in three weeks she'll be back. The bad part is that we've got some tough games coming up before then," said Johnson.

Only two games remain in the first half of district. After playing Onalaska, Crockett hosts Tarkington on Friday and Trinity comes to town next Tuesday to start the back end of the district schedule.

"We've only got a week or two to get it done. We have to pick it up quickly," said Johnson. "I asked the girls if Fairfield showed any mercy when they beat us 90-14 last year. I said, so why are we giving teams mercy? Play your game."

The Lady Dogs travel to Anderson (5-0) on Jan. 24 for a rematch with the Lady Owls, who won the first round matchup 63-59.

Against Coldspring, the Lady Bulldogs led 16-10 after a quarter and 25-20 at the break. After seeing their lead dwindle to 33-31 in the third, the Lady Dogs picked up the pace in the final period and dominated the Lady Trojans 19-8.

The bright spot was a 30-point performance by Johnson, who scored 13 of Crockett's 19 points in the final period to put the game away.

All of the other CHS scorers were held to single digits. Wooten had 7, Taylor 6, Tania Davis 4, Keyonna Davis 2, La'Kyra Hamilton 2 and Simpson 1.
