Lovelady ties for ninth in Lone Star Cup standings

LOVELADY — A state runner-up softball season capped

a phenomenal sports year for Lovelady High School and placed it in a four-way tie for ninth place in the Class 2A UIL Lone Star Cup standings.
The Lone Star Cup is awarded annually to six high schools, one in each of the six UIL classifications, based on their team performance in district and state championships. The winning schools in each classification will receive the UIL Lone Star Cup trophy and a $1,000 scholarship.


Lovelady tallied 44 points, putting it in a four-way tie for ninth place with Albany, Centerville and Timpson.


Lovelady picked up 16 of its 44 points with the Lady Lions' historic softball season. Additional points were scored in volleyball (six), football (four), girls basketball (eight), boys basketball (two), baseball (four) and DACD (four).


Standings will not become final until Saturday, July 1 after the tabulations are verified by the University Interscholastic League.


Mason dominated the 2021-22 school year with a school and classification record 86 points to win its third class 2A Lone Star Cup. Shiner finished second with 67, followed by third place Crawford with 64, Beckville with 61 and Lindsay with 50.


Gruver and Hamilton tied for sixth with 48 points and Clarendon was eighth with 46.


Rounding out the standings behind ninth place Lovelady, Centerville, Albany and Timpson are: 13. (tie) Christoval 43, Falls City 43, 15. Refugio 42, 16. (tie) Archer City 40, New Home 40, 18. Coleman 39, 19. Wellington 38, 20. (tie) Muenster 36, Normangee 36, Tenaha 36, 23. Tolar 35, 24. (tie) Bremond 34, Freer 34, Lipan 34, Plains 34, Thorndale 34, Weimar 34.


Lone Star Cup winners in other classifications are: 1A Abbott. 3A Lorena, 4A Argyle, 5A Dallas Highland Park and 6A Southlake Carroll.
Honoring the best overall athletic and academic programs in Texas, the UIL Lone Star Cup is open to all UIL participant high schools.


Standings include: team tennis, cross country, marching band, military marching band, volleyball, robotics BEST, football, congress, spirit, swimming and diving, wrestling, mariachi, film, basketball, robotics FIRST, soccer, academics, one-act play, theatrical design, track and field, golf, tennis, softball and baseball.
