IAH Secure Adult Detention Facility will focus on environmental health through the end of the year as part of its Fit for Life initiative. Surroundings make an impact on how people feel and experience their lives. The goal is to improve the facility environment to the extent that it will positively impact staff and detainees.

Those involved plan to identify possible improvements to the facility’s environmental health. This is the latest in a series of efforts at IAH Secure Adult Detention Facility meant to improve staff and detainees’ overall physical and mental health.

“I think environmental improvements, such as better light quality, targeted cleanliness, and elimination of noise pollution, may serve as helpful improvements at the IAH Secure Adult Detention Facility” Facility Administrator Alexander Sanchez said. “I like to think about how subtle environmental improvements can make life better for everyone. This quarter, we will determine how to improve our environment. I’m very optimistic about this endeavor.”

The 2022 campaign has focused on one area per quarter, including healthy eating, fitness, mental health and now, environmental health.

During the third quarter when the facility focused on mental health, they were able to focus the detainees on mindfulness training using the acronym STOP. S – Stop what you are doing, put things down for a minute. T – Take a breath. O – Observe your thoughts, feelings, and emotions. P – Proceed with something that will support you in the moment.

“We have spent the first three quarters of 2022 finding ways to improve eating habits, physical fitness and mental health. This latest focus on environmental health is an excellent opportunity to make lasting, meaningful improvements to our facility,” Sanchez said.
