CROCKETT – For the first time in years, the Crockett City Council meeting carried a festive tone as council members, city employees, and residents of Crockett were invited to celebrate the recent improvements to IT Williams Park, located on Martin Luther King Boulevard in Crockett.

The weather couldn’t have been more cooperative for the gathering held on Monday, April 3, under the newly completed pavilion at the park. The meeting opened with the Pledge of Allegiance led by two young students, Aziyah and Aziuna Mitchell, followed by council members who expressing their gratitude to the city officials and Crockett residents for supporting the improvements and thanking those who helped the project come to fruition.

Mayor Dr. Ianthia Fisher gave a brief history of the park, named after long-time Crockett professor I.T. Willams. Fisher shared that she had worked alongside Williams and said that, besides education, his ultimate goal was to bring activities to the community, especially to the children in the neighborhood. In the 1980s, Williams pushed to develop a section of neighborhood land into a park. During that time, he organized activities and implemented the first summer food programs so that children who weren’t at school would still get meals.

Besides the pavilion, which is equipped with electrical outlets and lighting, other additions included an open roof covering the public restrooms, security lights, and a water fixture that can be used for bounce houses or any other general park use. Prior to the new additions, local volunteers had already begun helping spruce up the park by repainting some of the playground equipment and revitalizing the basketball courts.

After the meeting was adjourned, attendees were invited to stay and have hot dogs, sausage wraps, chips, and drinks provided by the city.
