The Crockett Garden Club is busy preparing to keep Houston County beautiful. The organization is celebrating its 14th anniversary of sponsoring the Spring Flower and Bulb Sale, and this year promises to be the biggest and best yet.

The Garden Club uses the proceeds from this sale and the fall flower and bulb sale to give back to the community with projects like the Bible Garden and Butterfly Garden, landscaping at the Library, Civic Center, City Hall, Depot, and the Memorial Bench in the Davy Crockett Park.

As in past years, there will be flats of begonias, petunias, verbenas, marigolds, dianthus, salvias, vincas, impatiens, zinnias, lantanas, lobelia, caladiums, and geraniums – just a few of the plant varieties that will be offered. All of these were chosen because they do well in the spring, summer, and fall here in Zone 8.

Maybe you don’t have a large flowerbed, so a whole flat of plants is too many. We’ve got you covered! You may buy individual plants instead of the entire flat or mix plants to make up a flat. Dish gardens and hanging baskets that don’t take up much room but give an area a pop of color will also be for sale.

What if you have a brown thumb and trouble getting things growing? There are bulletproof plants to choose from, like Mexican heather, Mexican petunia, foxtail fern, asparagus fern,  several varieties of herbs (rosemary, basil, lavender), and a variety of succulents. All are very forgiving, even if slightly neglected by the gardener.

Garden Club members will also be selling “pass-along” plants.

These plants have been growing in their yards for years and are hard to find at a retail store. It’s an opportunity to obtain something unique for a very reasonable price.

Another perk of purchasing your plants from the Garden Club is that you can pre-order them until March 31, and the plants will be set aside for you to pick up on the sale day, April 7. Call Connie Hand at 936-544-3061 to make those arrangements.

When you support this one-day sale, you go home with two good feelings - first, that your home will be more beautiful, and second, that you have contributed to an organization helping to make the whole community more beautiful.

Members of the Club will be on-site during the sale to give gardening advice or just for a friendly chat. If you are interested in being involved in the Crockett Garden Club, join us every first Thursday of the month at 9:30 a.m. in the Family Life Center of First United Methodist Church of Crockett.
