Lady Jackets, ‘Jackets takin’ care of business

The Lady Jacket volleyball team took care of business this week sweeping both Colmesneil on Tuesday 25-15, 25-10, and 25-11 and #12 state ranked 2A Garrison on Friday. 

On Tuesday Marae Pounds led in kills with 11. Pounds also had 9 aces. Lauren Citrano and Lily Payne each had 5 kills, Citrano also had 4 aces and 5 digs. Emma Byrd had 5 aces and 24 assists. Sydney Brock had 19 digs and 15 service receptions. Ty Cochran went 3 for 3 on kills and had one block. 

The Lady Jackets then faced Garrison for the second time this season on Friday. The first match was in tournament play back in August and the Lady Jackets fell 2-1. This match went differently with the Lady Jackets on top with scores of 25-22, 25-8, and 25-19. Lily Read ended with an impressive 20 kills, 8 digs, and 11 service receptions. Marae Pounds had 11 kills, one ace, three digs, and three service receptions. Emma Byrd led aces with 3 and assists with 36 while also having 10 digs and 2 kills. Lauren Citrano, and Sydney Brock picked up an ace each. 

Brock also had 14 digs, 19 service receptions, and three assists. Lily Payne had three solo blocks and three kills. Ty Cochran had 5 kills. The JV squad also swept Colmesneil and Garrison. This week the Lady Jackets get a much needed rest after 31 matches. Their season record as of now is 25-9. They will pick back up on Sept. 24 at home vs Warren and then start district on September 27 vs Goodrich, also at home.

The Yellowjacket football team finally got a chance to show their home crowd what they have been working on with an impressive showing on Friday Sept. 13 vs Leveretts Chapel. It only took 2 quarters of play to defeat the Lions 51-0 due to the 45 point mercy rule. The Jackets had 12 total plays of offense with 220 total yards. Jesse Bittick had 5 carries, 106 yards, 2 touchdowns. Jaxon Gay had 5 carries, 88 yards, and two touchdowns. Kasen Citrano had 2 carries, 26 yards, one touchdown. Bittick also had a big night on defense with 8 tackles, 3 forced fumbles, and one interception for a touchdown. Clay Busey had 6 tackles and one interception for a touchdown. Jaxon Gay had 9 tackles, Kasen Citrano had 7 tackles, Kevron Green had 4 tackles and one forced fumble. Blake Zulpo had 4 tackles, two forced fumbles. Cutter Lowe had 3 tackles with one forced fumble. 

Rex Gilzow had one tackle and Russell McDonnald had two tackles. Overall the defense only allowed 68 yards. This week the Jackets will travel to Union Hill to face the state ranked Bulldogs on Sept. 20 with kickoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
