AUSTIN – Hometown hero Troy Costello was recognized in Austin last week for his service and sacrifice to his community during the “Star of Texas” awards ceremony.

The Woodville Police Department officer was among 21 Texan first responders who were honored for their courage and heroism in the line of duty.

Gov. Greg Abbott hosted the event last Wednesday, on the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks. “It’s a day that no American will ever forget,” Abbott said.

The “Star of Texas” awards are designated to commemorate any first responders who demonstrate heroism and sacrifice in their service. During the ceremony, Abbott was joined by the state’s First Lady Cecilia Abbott, and several other dignitaries, as well as the families of those who were awarded.

“To serve as a first responder is to answer a higher calling. It means putting yourself between danger and the people you serve,” Abbott said.

Costello was shot and wounded in the line of duty last year, in September. He had responded to an early morning call regarding a suspicious person causing a disturbance. When Costello located and attempted to make contact with the person, the man shot him.

That suspect, identified as 41-year-old Reginal Owens, of Hemphill, was later shot and killed by law enforcement officers who were in pursuit of him following his assault on Costello.

Costello, who was shot to his face, had to undergo surgeries and rehabilitation before returning home and eventually returning to work.

Rep. Trent Ashby (R-Lufkin) who was at the awards ceremony, gave a special shout-out to Costello. “It was my honor to present him with a resolution and a flag flown over the Capitol to commemorate his bravery and service,” he said.
