WOODVILLE – Woodville’s own John Stagg received the “President’s Lifetime Achievement Award” from President Joe Biden for his many hours of volunteer work with the American Red Cross.

The award was presented to Stagg by Natalie Warren, Executive Director of the American Red Cross of Southeast and Deep East Texas Chapter, and Tramena Horn, Disaster Program Specialist, at an award lunch on Sept. 5 at St. Michaels Catholic Church in Jasper.

Warren’s chapter comprises 17 southeast Texas counties.

Stagg currently takes care of dealings with government agencies, as when last March was Red Cross month for Tyler County, and he has coordinated with a host of agencies and is available as an experienced disaster resource. Formerly, he was Disaster Assistance Team (DAT) Captain for the Red Cross for all kinds of disasters from housefires to large-scale flooding and forest fires, overseeing relief stations, and more.

He also led mock disaster exercises to aid in teamwork and communication with local and county emergency services.

Warren said the award was for those with over 4,000 hours, and Stagg has so far clocked 13,185 hours. He and his precious wife Mary Annette are nearing their 17th year volunteering for the Red Cross.

Warren said the Staggs “have both been pillars of the community and have forever served with the upmost respect for the organization, community and the clients we serve.”

Many residents, scores of disaster victims, and a host of friends from church could have been asked yet allow the following represent the sentiments of all.

Tyler County Judge Milton Powers said “I’m honored to recognize Mr. John Stagg’s exceptional dedication to the American Red Cross. With decades of service, he has selflessly given his time and expertise to help those in need. His leadership and guidance have been instrumental in shaping the Red Cross’ local presence, and his commitment to disaster response and to other initiatives has been invaluable. His remarkable work ethic and passion for helping others embody the values we hold dear, and his impact will be felt for generations to come.”

Tyler County Sheriff Bryan Weatherford said “I just want to take this opportunity to thank Mr. Stagg for his selfless service and dedication to Tyler County and the Great State of Texas.”

Woodville Chief of Police Michael McCulley said, “John Stagg and his commitment to our community have been steady and constant for 40-plus years. I’ve been very honored to have worked with John during these years and can assure the community that you would not have found anyone more dedicated to serving his community. I extend my sincere thanks to John for a job well done.”

One of Stagg’s several wise sayings is, “If you’re too busy to help someone, you’re too busy.”
