Eagles tame Orangefield Bobcats in season opener

ORANGEFIELD – The Woodville Eagles opened their season last Friday night in Orangefield and defeated the Bobcats 27-7.

Sophomore quarterback Luke Babin opened the scoring with a 64-yard touchdown to take a 6-0 lead.  Defensive end Tayvion Hunter scored on an impressive 93-yard fumble return to bring a 13-7 lead into halftime.  The Eagles offense continued to score on a 16-yard pass from Babin to running back Zayon Williams to increase the lead to 20-7. Babin wasn’t finished yet.  The final scoring drive ended on a 27-yard reception to Kevunte McDaniel for a final score of 27-7.  

Hunter was a finalist for the Dave Campbell Player of the Week Award in Texas High School Football.  Hunter had 14 tackles, three tackles for losses, four sacks, and a 93-yard touchdown return

Babin completed 11/15 ( 71.4%)  of his passes for 122 yards, two  touchdowns and no interceptions. Babin rushed for 104 yards on seven carries.  

Williams also rushed for 43 yards on twelve carries and three receptions for 13 yards. Gage Tolar caught passes for 60 yards.  

The Eagles racked up 332 yards of total offense including 124 passing and 208 rushing. The Bobcats totaled 299 offensive yards with 77 coming in the air and 222 on the ground.  

Woodville’s defense was stellar on third down.  Orangefield was held to a mere 1 for 13 on third down conversions. The Eagles also recovered three fumbles and had an interception.  Woodville also fumbled twice and were 5 for 13 on third down.  

The Eagles will host the Anahuac Panthers on a rare Thursday night game this week.  

Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. The Eagles are currently 1-0 this season.

The Lady Eagles went undefeated last week defeating Kirbyville 3-0 and Orangefield 3-1.  Woodville is currently ranked sixth in state and will attend the Hardin-Jefferson Tournament.  The sub varsity teams will travel to the Silsbee Tournament this weekend.  Tuesday, both varsity and JV1 will travel to Deweyville to take on the Pirates.

The middle school girls will travel to Central Heights on Thursday starting at 4 p.m.. The cross-country teams will compete on Wednesday in Broaddus.
