COLDSPRING — It was a nail-biter on Aug. 27 as the Lady Trojans hosted the Lady Lions of Livingston — both teams were geared for a play-off atmosphere, and the fans were not disappointed.

After losing to Livingston 25-22, the Lady Trojans regrouped for back-to-back 27-25 wins. The Lions roared back in the fourth, 27-25, setting up the rubber match. Coldspring took that game 15-11.

“I am so proud of the team; it was an all-out team effort,” Senior Captain Ella Phillips said. “Every one of the team members put everything we had into this win.”

Head Coach Dwain Anderson said, “I told the girls even when we were down by 7 points that we were not out of this game. They made everything work for themselves tonight.”

On Friday and Saturday, the Lady Trojans went 4-2 overall at the Hudson volleyball tournament.

Coldspring downed Shelbyville 25-18 and 25-22; lost to Huntington 25-9, 20-25 and 25-27; beat Latexo 25-22, 21-25 and 25-12; beat Corrigan-Camden 25-14 and 25-16; lost to Tarkington 24-26 and 21-25; and went 2-1 in a second round against Latex 22-25, 25-21 and 25-22.

“We finished third in the gold bracket, beating Shelbyville, Latexo twice and Corrigan,” Anderson said. “We lost to Huntington in three sets during pool play and Tarkington in bracket play.

“The girls played hard, and several played through some minor bumps and bruises that you get during tournament season,” he said. “It was a complete team effort, everyone stepped up and did their part to help us take third place.”

Top producers in the tournament included Cali Crowder, a junior setter who had 153 assists and served at a 96 percent rate during the tournament; Ella Phillips, a senior hitter with 72 kills and 16 blocks; Tess Phillips had 22 kills and 70 digs; Ashlynn Holley with 62 kills, 60 digs and 6 blocks; and KeKe Nixon, a senior hitter with 15 kills and 6 block.

“She is our vocal leader on the court,” Anderson said. “She is the player the other girls look to when we are in tough situations.”

Shepherd

The Lady Pirates went 2-4 at the Hudson tournament last weekend.

Shepherd won 2-1 over Lovelady (25-18, 24-26, 25-20) and 2-0 over Onalaska (25-0, 25-0), but lost 2-0 to Splendora (11-25, 19-25), 2-0 to Normangee (18-25, 16-25), 2-0 to Huntington (20-25, 8-25), and 2-0 to Hemphill (21-25, 20-25).
