WOODVILLE – Patriot Day is a federally recognized holiday, introduced in 2001 as a day of mourning for those who were lost in the tragic events of Sept. 11 of that year.

Since then Patriot Day celebrations have occurred each year, taking place all over the country, and fostering a sense of togetherness, as well as service, in the various ways they are celebrated. This weekend, for Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 7-8, Veterans of Foreign Wars post number 2033 is hosting its second annual Patriots Day weekend extravaganza.

The event will take place on the VFW post land, located beside of the actual post building at 301 Veterans Way in Woodville. The VFW is asking the community “How much fun can we have?”

According to the VFW, there will be “loads” of entertainment, including the 1-Ton Bullet Band; a live DJ, Daryl Morris, a.k.a. Harry Cheaks and two solo acts, Dave Christen and Troy Seale.

Christen is a Dallas-based singer/songwriter with several records and singles to his credit. He is a regular performer around the DFW area, and at venues in the area, as well, such as Conroe’s Corner Pub.

Seale, who travels with his father, Bill, as emcee, is a guitarist from Kennard, and Army combat veteran, who suffers from PTSD, and uses music as a therapeutic tool.
He and his father tour and use music to help other vets dealing with similar situations.

The event will kick off with a 9-11 remembrance walk/run at the Woodville High School track. The run/walk, which goes from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. is a 5K that allows participants the chance to walk or run with a veteran.

There will be plenty of food trucks and various vendors with a variety of goods, but event coordinator JW Ker said that more vendors are welcome. For interested vendors, they can call Kern at 409-951-9977.

Post commander Mike King said that the VFW offers a range of assistance programs that are aimed at helping veterans of every generation.

“Whether that means providing free, professional help filing or appealing a VA claim, offering scholarships for post-secondary education or providing emergency financial relief when times get tough, the VFW is here for all of America’s veterans,” King said.

Tax-deductible donations can be made to the post through its website, Vfw2033.org or at the event this weekend.
