WOODVILLE – Woodville High School has a strong FCCLA program, with Donna Blackerby as the program’s instructor. FCCLA stands for Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America.

At last Wednesday’s meeting of the Woodville Rotary club at the Pickett House, Blackerby presented Woodville ISD sophomore Kelsi Risinger, who spoke about her involvement in FCCLA.

Risinger is the Region IV Vice President of Parliamentary Law. Her duties include hosting all voting delegate meetings, organizing everything for incoming officers, and more. Risinger explained, “there are so many opportunities it (FCCLA) provides for students like traveling across the U.S. to attend national conferences, you learn real-world skills that help you in your career and apply for college scholarships. This summer, I went to Seattle, Washington as a voting delegate for Texas at the National Leadership Conference, June 29 through July 3, where I got to vote on proposed by-law changes through the organization and I had the privilege of going to the Space Needle, the Public Market, and I even took at ferry ride to Bainbridge Island. It was a lot of fun and I had a great time”.

Risinger also attended the June Leadership Officer summer camp in Navasota, where all officers across the state meet for a week and plan every regional conference and state conference together. They also discuss expectations for the national conference.

Risinger went on to explain the opportunities FCCLA provides students, “they get to travel across the United States to attend national conferences and forge friendships with other youth leaders, participate in competitive events, from fashion design, early childhood education, culinary arts, entrepreneurship and nutrition. Students develop real world skills that prepare them to be college and career ready. Students can explore various career pathways within family and consumer sciences, and apply for many scholarships, as well as developing leadership skills.

FCCLA is the ultimate leadership experience. It is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. It is the only career and technical in-school student organization with family as its central focus. Participation in national programs and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers, and communities.
